What are the HFSP Long-Term and Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships?
The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSP) Long-Term (HFSP LTF) and Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (HFSP CDF) support top postdoctoral researchers that propose innovative, ground-breaking projects that will broaden their research skills by moving into new areas of study while working in a new country. Who can apply for the HFSP FTF or HFSP CDF?
- Postdoc with Ph.D. awarded between 28 Sep 2020 – 28 Sep 2023 in a biological discipline, who will broaden their expertise by proposing a project in the life sciences which is significantly different from their previous Ph.D./postdoctoral work (LTF); alternatively with a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences (e.g. chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering and computer sciences) who have not worked in biological field before (CDF).
- A candidate who is not a national from one of the member states (MS) may apply to work only in a research institution in one of the MS.
- A candidate who is a national of one of the MS can apply to work in a research institution in any country.
- HFSPO countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus (EU part only), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

When to apply for the HFSP LTF or HFSP CDF?
The nearest HFSP fellowships Letter of Intent submission deadline is Thu 11 May 2023 1:00 pm US Eastern Time. Applicants whose projects will be selected based on the information contained in the Letter of Intent will be invited to submit full proposals by Thu 28 Sep 2023 1:00 pm US Eastern Time.

How to apply for the HFSP LTF or HFSP CDF?
- Find and read programme guidelines:
- Establish your ProposalCentral account and register your ORCID ID.
- Negotiate a foreign postdoc with your proposed host institution.
- Submit a Letter of Intent by Thu 11 May 2023 1:00pm US Eastern Time through ProposalCentral, containing:
- title of proposal
- keywords of proposed research plan
- iii) proposed research plan (limited to 3000 characters including spaces, this summary can be used as the abstract of the full application if it is invited, see below), including a short description of the background, aims, hypotheses, experimental approach, and conclusions
- personal information
- CV
- field and title of Ph.D.
- information on the proposed host supervisor and host institution
- disclosure on previous collaborations and publications with the host supervisor (if any)
- confirmation that the host supervisor is aware of and supports the application
- publication list
- If invited to submit a full proposal, Contact two referees (at least one referee must be your former research supervisor) and ask them to provide a recommendations letter; let them know your proposed research plan.
- Contact the host institute supervisor and ask him/her for a recommendations letter.
- Register/Activate the referees and the host supervisor in the ProposalCentral as soon as possible (host supervisors and referees must have submitted their section before the applicant can submit the application).
- Complete your online application form in the ProposalCentral application system
Figures, pictures and tables cannot be included in the application.- a summary of previous work (the same as the short summary of the LOI)
- an abstract of the proposed research project (the same as the short summary of the LOI)
- a detailed research plan of proposed project
- information on why and how the proposed project is a significant change from previous work
- information on why and how the proposed project is of a frontier nature
- information on why the chosen host lab is a good fit
- information on how the applicant will benefit from being in the host lab (e.g. unique infrastructure, mentoring, exposure to new techniques etc.)
- an updated publication list
- recommendation letters from two referees
- a recommendation letter from the host supervisor, explaining how the proposed research plan is a new direction for the host lab and a significant change from the applicant’s prior work (either during Ph.D. or postdoctoral training); the host supervisor should also explain how and why their lab is particularly suited to supporting the aims and missions of HFSP to enable the most talented young researchers to embark on a frontier research project that will shape their career trajectory; the host supervisor should also outline a mentorship plan for the applicant. Host supervisors also need to register their research experience and a list of their publications. If a candidate has two host supervisors, they should both provide letters of recommendation.

Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants by late March 2024.
