What is the Ignaz L. Lieben Award?

The Ignaz L. Lieben Award is given to scientists for outstanding achievements in the fields of molecular biology, chemistry or physics. It is awarded to scientists under the age of 40, who have a PhD, can demonstrate outstanding work in their field and have worked as scientists without interruption during the last 3 years (at the submission date) in one of the following countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina; Croatia; Slovakia; Slovenia; Czechia; Hungary; or Austria.

Potential recipients are nominated by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the academies of the above countries. See more details in the Ignatz L. Lieben Award summary  .

Who can be nominated for the Ignaz L. Lieben Award?

Scientists under 40 (the age limit is raised by a maximum of 4 years for periods of childcare) with a PhD, who can demonstrate outstanding work in their field and have worked as scientists without interruption during the last 3 years in one of the following countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia.

  • It raises the profile of Czech science in the world.
  • You receive a financial award of $36,000.

When to be nominated for the Ignaz L. Lieben Award?

  • The nomination is annually in April or May.
  • The Austrian Academy of Sciences and the academies of the above countries may nominate suitable candidates; full Members of an Academy of sciences may neither apply nor be nominated.
  • The prize winner is decided by the General Assembly of the OeAW at the recommendation of an awards committee on the basis of international peer review.
  • Re-application for the award is permitted after two years have passed.

How to be nominated for the Ignaz L. Lieben Award?

  1. Find and read guidelines
  2. Obtain a recommendation letter from a collaborator or contact the Project Office to obtain an IOCB recommendation letter.
  3. Prepare the other documents required as part of the application: tabular CV, list of publications, brief statement of the nature and extent of your contributions to these selected publications, selection of a maximum of five of your most important publications as PDF or Word files
  4. Fill in the online form and upload the documents as a total of 6 PDF files here:
    • Uploaded PDF of the application (named Application_Surname.pdf):
      1. CV;
      2. List of publications;
      3. Brief statement of the nature and extent of the candidate's contribution to these selected publications;
      4. Letter of recommendation (optional) (applicant & Project office).
    • Uploaded PDF of the five most important publications (named Publication1-5_Surname.pdf).
  5. Submit the application through the online form by the deadline (April/May each year). Also send the application documents and the completed signed online form by post to Fellowships and Awards, Austrian Academy of Sciences.
  6. Inform the IOCB Board of your application in order for the Academy of Sciences to support your nomination (applicant & Project office).
