What is the Newton International Fellowship?

Newton International Fellowships (Newton) support the development and training of postdoctoral researchers at an early stage of their career from any country outside the UK, by providing an opportunity to work at a UK research institution for two years. For more details see Newton 2025 summary  

Who can apply for the Newton International Fellowship?

Postdocs from any country outside the UK up to 7 years full time research experience since completing a Ph.D.

Why to apply for the Newton International Fellowship?

  • It is a prestigious opportunity to have a postdoc position in an excellent research laboratory in the UK for 2 years and to establish new cooperation with an outstanding supervisor.
  • You can develop your professional career & improve your skills.
  • You can get financial support of up to L280,000 for the 2 years (this is a maximum value over two years).
  • Funding can be used to cover basic salary costs and associated on-costs (in accordance with the host institutions internal rules), research expenses, relocation and visa costs for the fellow and their dependents (partner and children).
  • The UK host institution will be eligible for payment towards overheads/contribution to host a fellow to cover access for the individual to the institution facilities, e.g. office/laboratory space, access to essential equipment & facilities, etc.
  • Fellows may be eligible for follow-up funding for up to 5 years following the completion of the Fellowship.
  • Former Fellows become part of the alumni programme of the scheme to foster long-term relations between Newton International Fellows and the UK research base.

How to apply for the Newton International Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your FlexiGrant® account at Royal Society and register your ORCID ID.
  3. Find an outstanding supervisor/sponsor from an excellent public-funded research institution in the UK and negotiate his/her mentoring of your postdoctoral research project and the institutional support of the UK host institution. Ask the UK host institution and the UK supervisor/sponsor for their support (the support is a mandatory part of the application).
  4. Contact two referees who should be able to provide unbiased comment on the field of research and on the applicant and/or the UK sponsor. At least one of the nominated referees must be a UK-based researcher. Ask them for references, recommendations and support (the support is a mandatory part of the application).
  5. Contact your current supervisor and ask him/her for references, recommendations and support (the support is a mandatory part of the application).
  6. Activate contacts of
    1. the UK sponsor
    2. the head of department at the UK host institution
    3. two referees (at least one must be a UK-based researcher, one nominated by the applicant and one by the co-applicant, must not be on the assessment panel or on RS Council, not from same institution as applicant or co-applicant, not a former/current supervisor of applicant)
    Please note: All referees and other participants must have a Flexi-Grant account in order to contribute to an application.
  7. Complete and finalise your online application on your FlexiGrant® account.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in Aug 2025.
The grant start date is expected to be between 1 Oct 2025 – 31 Mar 2026 (preferably at the start of the month).
