What is the CAIXA Fellowships?

The postdoctoral fellowships programme, Junior Leader “la Caixa” is aimed at hiring excellent researchers who wish to continue their research career in Spanish or Portuguese territory. The objectives of this programme are to foster high-quality, innovative research, to support the best scientific talents by providing them with an attractive, competitive environment to conduct excellent research. Who can apply for the CAIXA Fellowships?

Outstanding postdoc of any nationality (2-7 years after obtaining Ph.D.); extension of 1 year can be applied for every parental leave.

Why apply for the CAIXA Fellowships?

  • You can get financial support up to €305 100 per project (e.g. salary up to €59 000 per year, annual research project costs of €38 500, plus annual family assistance of €1,200 per child and mobility assistance €5 400 to be paid at the start of the fellowship).

How to apply for the CAIXA Fellowships?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Find an outstanding supervisor from an excellent host research CoE   in Spain or Portugal and negotiate your further full-time position at this institution. Ask the supervisor for a declaration of interest letter.
  3. Register to the Online Application Platform and fill your chosen host institution in the section „Prospective research centre“.
  4. Contact 2-5 referees and ask them to provide letter of reference and inform them that la CAIXA Foundation will get in touch with them through an online procedure.
  5. Provide names and contact details of these referees to the Online Application Platform.
  6. Fill in your online application form in the Online Application Platform.
    • Summary of the proposed research project (max. 4 pages).
    • A personal statement describing research career, main research line and achievements (max. 3 pages).
    • If relevant: An ethic table pointing out the ethical aspects of the project proposal.
    • If you claim an exception due to a career break (maternity, paternity, long term illness), then you must provide the relevant supporting documents.
  7. Finalize your application:
    • Online form (personal statement: summary + research career).
    • Upload a copy of your doctoral diploma (in English or in original language plus English translation - you can do the translating yourself).
    • Upload a declaration of interest letter signed by a supervisor of the research center.
    • If relevant upload an ethic table and/or documentation for career breaks.
  8. Submit your application before Thu 03 Oct 2024 14:00 CEST (Spain time). Announcement of preselected results and call for interviews to applicant via e-mail on 25 Jan 2024.
  9. Be prepared for an interview between 10-12 Mar 2025 in Barcelona. The travel reimbursement for costs above €15 provided on request.

Final evaluation results will be announced to applicant via e-mail on 19 Mar 2025.
The start of the fellowship: between 02 May - 31 Dec 2025.
