What is the EMBO New Venture Fellowship?

EMBO New Venture Fellowships (NVFs) were set up in memory of molecular biologist Suzanne Eaton to fund research visits of 7–90 days between laboratories in eligible countries. The aim is to support early career scientists, in any field of life science research to enter a new field or bring a new direction to their research efforts NVFs are intended for joint research work rather than consultations. Who can apply for the EMBO New Venture Fellowship?

Active researchers at any career stage with at least two years of Ph.D. (or equivalent) level experience and no more than two years of experience as an independent group leader: group leaders, senior researchers, junior researchers, postdocs, Ph.D. students.

Why apply for the EMBO New Venture Fellowship?

  • You can get financial support (travel costs & daily subsistence rates) for your short (7–90 days) research visit of an excellent research laboratory in life sciences in eligible countries.
  • You can develop research in a new field or bring a new direction to your research efforts.
  • You can develop your international cooperation and research network.
  • Awarded applicants can stay on their research visit for an additional three months (maximum), if other non-EMBO funding is found.

When to apply for the EMBO New Venture Fellowship?

EMBO NVF call is open throughout the year (a change from 2023 onwards), it is recommended that you submit your proposal at least 3 months before the proposed starting date. Evaluation results are announced within 2-4 months from the submission date.

How to apply for the EMBO New Venture Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your EMBO account and register your ORCID ID.
  3. Negotiate a foreign supervisor for your short research visit in an excellent research laboratory.
  4. Negotiate the arrangements for your short stay research visit with your IOCB supervisor and request authorisation to submit the proposal via the internal electronic IOCB Project Proposal Approval System (PPAS). You must be either connected to the IOCB network or via the IOCB Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access this system.
  5. Contact two referees (one referee must be your current supervisor, neither referee can be from the receiving institute) and ask them for references and recommendations. In the case that the applicant is already an independent researcher, only one reference letter from a legal representative of the home institution (Dean, Director etc.) is required. The referees will be able to submit their references confidentially through the online application systém.
  6. Contact the receiving institute supervisor and ask him/her for an Acceptance Form and institutional support.
  7. Activate the referees and the receiving institute supervisor in the EMBO online system as soon as possible, preferably by 4 weeks prior to the submission. It is your responsibility to check that the referees and the receiving institute supervisor have received the request and have completed the form.
  8. Complete your online application form in the EMBO online system. Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.
    • Applicant;
    • contact details for two referees;
    • contact details for the receiving institute & supervisor;
    • proposed work: a 250-word summary, a 1500-word synopsis of the proposed activity, references, keywords, subject area, proposed duration, justification (200 words), career plan;
    • present work: home institute, current position, current work (500 words), how the New Venture Fellowship will lead to changes in your career trajectory (200 words);
    • scientific CV: research experience, full CV since Ph.D. research, education, Ph.D. award, publications;
    • other funding sources; career breaks.
  9. Finalise your application.
    • Online Application Form via the EMBO online system (applicant)
    • Two Letters of Reference submitted online (referees)
    • Acceptance Letter from the receiving institute submitted online (Host institution / Project Office & IOCB supervisor)
  10. Submit your application at any point throughout the year, there are no deadlines. It is recommended that applications be submitted at least three months before the proposed start date.
