What is the Life Sciences Research Foundation Fellowship?

Life Sciences Research Foundation (LSRF) identifies and funds exceptional young scientists at a critical juncture of their training in all areas of basic life sciences and provides a high-quality peer-review service to anyone (individual, foundation, company) wishing to sponsor a fellow who shares their vision of important research. Who can apply for the LSRF Fellowship?

Postdocs of any nationality with a Ph.D. completed no more than 5 years prior to the application deadline date (U.S. citizens are eligible to work in any geographic location, non-U.S. citizens must work in a U.S. laboratory).

Why to apply for the LSRF Fellowship?

  • It is an opportunity to do a 3-year postdoctoral research stay in life sciences at an excellent research institution in U.S (or elsewhere, e.g. the IOCB, if a U.S. citizen).
  • You should choose a host institution that provides the best research environment for your project.
  • You can establish new cooperation with outstanding foreign supervisors.
  • You can develop your professional career & improve your skills.
  • You can match a sponsor with similar research interests who will fund your research project.
  • You can get financial support of $231,000 for the 3 years (stipend $66,000/year & research allowance $11,000/year).
  • You can attend LSRF Annual Meetings held in October and present your research.
  • You can ask LSRF to withhold up to $5,000/year. If you will move to a non-profit institution in the U.S. the escrow fund (up to $15,000) will be reverted to you as a one-time mini-grant.
  • You will become a member of LSRF Alumni.

When to apply for the LSRF Fellowship?

The nearest LSRF deadline is on Tue 01 Oct 2024 8:00 pm EST for applicants, and on Fri 01 Nov 2024 8:00 pm EST for submission of supervisors & reference letters.

How to apply for the LSRF Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your LSRF account.
  3. Find an outstanding supervisor from an excellent host research institution in U.S. (e.g. Caltech, Columbia University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of California, etc.) who will provide the best research environment, support & mentorship for your project. Negotiate mentoring of your postdoctoral research project and the institutional support of the host institution.
  4. Contact three referees (one has to be your Ph.D. advisor) and ask them for their willingness to critically appraise your research qualifications.
  5. Complete and finalise in your online application on your LSRF account.

    • Research proposal: research plan with figures & tables (be concise, max 5 pages + 2 pages for the literature cited uploaded as a pdf; ; 0.5in margins, min 12pt Times New Roman/11pt Arial for main text, min 10pt Times New Roman/9pt Arial for figure legends and tables) (applicant & supervisor)
  6. Submit your online application through your LSRF account before Tue 01 Oct 2024 8:00 pm EST.
  7. LSRF will send an e-mail to your supervisor and 3 referees with the link to submit their letters online and informing them that the deadline is on Fri 01 Nov 2024 8:00 pm. You will receive confirmation emails when the application is finalized and when each of the referees/supervisors submits their letters. If you fail to receive these confirmations or wish to check the status of submission of these letters, click the link in the email of the confirmation of application submission or contact apply@lsrf.org.

LSRF will announce 50–60 finalists in late February 2025. Then between March and July, LSRF will solicit potential sponsors to fund the finalists. Finalists are notified immediately if funding is secured for their project. 01 Aug 2025 is the only award activation date.
