Publishing your research paper: A guide for students

Need a great beginner’s guide to publishing your paper? Start with this free introductory video series created by Nature Masterclasses.

Step 1: Polish your paper

Once you’ve completed the draft of your research paper, our in-house scientific editors can help refine your text and suggest improvements. They’re also available to discuss any questions you may have before, during, and after the editing process. This service is free for IOCB employees. Their contact details are available here.

Step 2: Consider open access publishing

If you’re interested in open access publishing, discover our resources and learn about the process involved here.

Step 3: Choose the right journal

Open access publishing is highly encouraged for its role in accelerating scientific progress. However, be cautious of journals with dubious reputation, as publishing in them can harm your career. IOCB strongly recommends publishing your research only in trusted journals, as emphasized in our Code of Ethics, section III. Use the following resource to learn how to identify predatory journals and avoid them.

Step 4: Acknowledge your grant providers

Don’t forget to include Acknowledgements in your paper. These are required by grant providers and will be included in the ASEP bibliographic database managed by the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Step 5: Get your ORCID identifier

ORCID is a unique, permanent identifier used internationally to distinguish researchers and academics. If you don’t have an ORCID number, find out how to get one here.

Step 65: Add your paper to the ASEP database

Once your paper is published, promptly report it to the ASEP database. Only papers registered in the ASEP database are eligible for various evaluations that may include you or your research group. For more information, visit our ASEP page.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

IOCB publications database

Our internal database caters specifically to the needs of IOCB researchers, streamlining the process of acquiring data from your research publications. It also syncs with our external website, enabling your research group to showcase its work in an up-to-date and professional format. The ASEP database provides basic information on your paper, but for the best results, we recommend proactive approach, reaching out to Michal Hoskovec with the details of your latest publication. We also advise including a graphic abstract (even if not required by the journal) to showcase your IOCB group profile on our external website in the best possible light. The IOCB publications database also serves as a complete archive of the publication activities of the IOCB researchers since its establishment in 1953 and is gradually being updated.

Journal cover

If you’ve been invited to feature your research on a journal cover, the Communications team can help with graphics. Visit the Communications page for more information. Please note that IOCB doesn’t cover journal cover costs.
