When conducting research involving toxic or hazardous substances, aggressive chemicals, or GMOs, safety isn't just important—it's paramount. Every team member must be fully versed in the safety protocols specific to their work. Often, these safety considerations are closely connected with our ethical responsibilities.    Reporting Accidents
  • Emergency hotline – Call 112 (Czech & English) or 155 (usually only Czech).
  • In the event of injury, intoxication, or contamination involving a dangerous biomaterial, contact our  
    Safety and Health Officers:
  • If you’ve had an accident, report it IMMEDIATELY or within 24 hours at the latest!
  • In the event of serious injury or death, the Director of the institute must be informed.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

  • Follow this link to access our mandatory e-learning, module on OSH and fire safety. Read the step-by-step kurzu to guide you through the process.
  • Group leaders are responsible for conducting risk assessments and ensuring that every team member uses the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows the correct methodologies.
  • All relevant OSH, fire safety, and safety instruction documents are available here.
  • Don’t forget to register for our external hands-on first-aid course and the training how to use the breathing apparatus. Keep an eye out for noticeboard updates.
  • First-aid kits are inspected annually. Please restock any used items for the next user.
  • OSH and Fire Protection Proxies – Our current list of nominated proxies, along with the directive outlining their tasks and obligations, is available here.
  • Feeling ill? Had an accident?
    • Contact our in-house GP.
    • For emergency call 112 (English and Czech) or 155 (usually only Czech). With the emergency service share your address, identify where the injured person is in the building, what kind of injury or problem he/she have and what you did so far. Very often the emergency service stays online and giving you the instructions how to continue help.
    • A cardiac arrest? IOCB has two easy-to-use heart defibrillators on site. If you do use any of the machines, please inform Mr. Pošta.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

Electricity and Gas

  • Power sockets as well as electricity and gas connections are periodically inspected by licensed professionals.
  • To access key information about electricity backup options for various types of power sockets at the Institute, please visit this page.
  • In the laboratory only electrical equipment having official electric revision can be used. Appliances which do not have IOCB electric revision can not be used.
  • If you notice any issues, contact the Technical Maintenance department (Miroslav Dolejš, Jan Janoušek).
