What is the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship?

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (Banting PF) provide funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both Canadian and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research-based growth. For more details see Banting 2025-2026 summary  

Who can apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship?

PhD students/Postdocs of any nationality with a PhD completed between 15 Sep 2022 and 30 Sep 2026.

How to apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your CCV account on the Canadian Common CV (CCV website), fill in your CV and link the CV to your ResearchNet application.
  3. Establish your ResearchNet account and start to prepare your application.
  4. Identify area of your research. Applications related to health research will be processed by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), whereas those related to natural sciences and engineering by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). More details.
  5. Find an outstanding supervisor from an excellent host research institution in Canada or (for Canadian citizens who have received their PhD from a Canadian university) in another country, e.g. Czech Republic (IOCB Prague) that will provide the best research environment for your project. Negotiate mentoring of your postdoctoral research project and the institutional support of the host institution. Ask the supervisor & host institution to fill in
    1. Letter of endorsement (supervisor & host institution)
    2. Supervisor´s statement (supervisor & host institution)
  6. Contact three referees (one has to be written by an Arm’s Length Referee) who should be able to provide unbiased comment on the field of research and ask them for references and fulfilment of reference letters.
  7. Complete and finalise your online application with all required attachments.

    • Significance of research contributions: up to 3 most important research contributions (max 1 page) (applicant)
    • Significance of leadership contributions: up to 3 most important teaching/mentoring/administrative contributions (max 1 page) (applicant)
    • Fulfilment of degree requirements form (max 1 page, use template  ) (applicant)
    • Special circumstances: career delays (max 1 page) (applicant)
    • Copy of Ph.D. diploma (applicant)
    • Research proposal (max 4 pages including graphs & images) (applicant & supervisor)
    • Bibliography: citations for all works (max 4 pages) (applicant)
    • Letter of endorsement (max 1 page) (supervisor & host institution)
    • Supervisor´s statement: biography, appropriateness of the supervisor, research environment, applicant´s professional development, institutional synergy (max 4 pages) (supervisor & host institution)
    • Three reference letters, one has to be written by an Arm’s Length Referee (an expert in the field(s) who can assess the research proposal and CV in that capacity, e.g. the external examiner from the applicant’s doctoral defense or a specialist that the applicant met at a conference) (referees)

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in February 2026.
The grant start date is expected to be between 01 Apr and 01 Oct 2026.
