What is the King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship?

Charles A. King Trust (King Trust) supports postdocs in the mid to late stages of their postdoctoral research training in basic sciences relevant to human health & disease and the research that has significantly impacted biomedical advances and contributed to the subsequent development of an impressive host of therapeutic interventions spanning the entire range of human disease categories. Who can apply for the King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship?

Postdocs of any nationality who have completed at least 3 years and no more than 5 years of full-time postdoctoral research experience by the funding start date (postdoctoral work has begun between Oct 2015 – 30 Sep 2018) and who work in a non-profit academic or medical research institution in the state of Massachusetts (US), e.g. Boston Children's Hospital, Boston University, Brandeis University, Clark University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Suffolk University, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, etc. (List of colleges and universities in Massachusetts)

How to apply for the King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:

  3. Find a supervisor from an excellent host research institution in the state of Massachusetts, US (e.g. Boston Children's Hospital, Boston University, Brandeis University, Clark University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Suffolk University, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, etc.) who will provide the best research environment, support & mentorship for your project. Negotiate mentoring of your postdoctoral research project and the institutional support of the host institution. Ask your mentor to fill in

  4. Contact three referees (one has to be your Ph.D. advisor) and ask them for their willingness to critically appraise your research qualifications.
  5. Fill in names and contacts on two referees and mentor(s) on The Medical Foundation's online portal. Referees should have received an email from the King Trust with detailed information how to submit a confidential Letter of Recommendation before Wed 03 Mar 2021 12:00 US-ET.
  6. Complete your application:

    • Mentor´s Letter of Support: (i) describes the Applicant’s qualifications and provides a clear mentorship plan stating how the Mentor will be involved in the planning, execution, and supervision of the proposed research, and support the Applicant to further develop his/her independence and promote their scientific career. The mentorship plan must also specify the Mentor’s allocation of time and effort in training and support for the Applicant and the proposed research; (ii) describes research facilities and equipment available to the Applicant; (iii) confirms that the applicant meets all eligibility requirements; (iv) confirms an applicant’s degree(s) obtained outside the U.S. are equivalent to Ph.D.; (v) comments on the applicant´s publication record (max 4 pages, upload in PDF) (mentor)
    • Three confidential Letters of Recommendation: (i) Applicant´s scientific background, research ability & potential, self-reliance & independence, critical thinking skills (one has to be submitted by Thesis Advisor or Residency Director, max 4 pages, upload in PDF) (referees)

King Trust will announce evaluation results in fall 2021.
Successful applicants may start their research projects between Fri 01 Oct 2021 - Sat 01 Jan 2022.
