What is the JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowship?

JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowships (JSPS P) provide opportunities for excellent overseas postdoctoral researchers to conduct, under the guidance of their host researchers, cooperative long-term research with leading research groups at universities or research institutions in Japan. Acceptance of applications from the Czech Republic is provided by the International Cooperation Department of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS–OMS). Who can apply for the JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowship?

Overseas fellows (CANDIDATES) that are invited by the Japanese host researchers (applicants APPLICANTS) who are employed full-time/part time at a university or research institution in Japan may apply for the fellowship. Overseas fellows are postdocs who have obtained their Ph.D. degree between 02 Apr 2019 and 01 Apr 2025 and are citizens of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

When to apply for the JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowship?

There are two cut-offs for JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowship 2025
  • 1st stage: CAS deadline – Mon 28 Apr 2025
  • 2nd stage: JSPS deadline - Fri 25 Apr 2025 17:00 JST

How to apply for the JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish contact with a Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in Japan in your field, negotiate your research project and the institutional support with him/her and ask him/her to submit an application. You should make this contact well in advance of the host institution’s application deadline since the application documentation has to be first submitted through the CAS.
  3. The CAS will shortlist proposals and send the complete documents to JSPS by the JSPS application deadline. Applicants will be informed about selection outputs (Aug 2025).
  4. What should be sent to CAS? (with help of IOCB Project Office):
    1. aContact your Ph.D. supervisor or recommender, ask him/her for a Letter of Recommendation (max 1 page) – use LOR template  
    2. Use the JSPS Postdoctoral Standard 2025 Form 2  , complete your application.
    3. Ask Japanese or foreign-resident researcher to prepare Letter of acceptance/invitation (get inspired by the sample of the LOI template  ) from overseas prospective Japanese host institution.
    4. Prepare a copy of your Ph.D. degree diploma in PDF.
  5. The Japanese or foreign-resident researcher in Japan is the main APPLICANT who completes and submits the final application including documents received from CAS on JSPS Electronic Application System. The nearest deadline is on 25 Apr 2025 17:00 JST.
    • 2025_JSPS Postdoctoral Standard Form 2 (received from CAS) in PDF
    • Letter of Recommendation written and signed by the candidate’s Ph.D. supervisor/recommender (received from CAS) in PDF
    • Letter of acceptance/invitation (Japanese host institution)
    • Electronic Application Form 1 (Japanese host researcher)
    • Confirmation of the Application list (Japanese host institution)
    • A copy of the overseas fellow Ph.D. degree diploma in PDF (received from CAS)

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in August 2025. Applicants may start their research visits in Japan between 01 Sep 2025 – 30 Nov 2025.
