What is the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award?
Sofja Kovalevskaja Awards are awarded for a period of up to 5 years and support establishment of independent junior research groups at research institutions in Germany and their high-level, innovative research projects. For more details see Kovalevskaja Award 2019 summary
Who can apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award?
Internationally recognised and outstanding junior researchers up to 6 years since completing a Ph.D.
Why to apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award?
- It is a prestigious opportunity to establish your own independent junior research group in Germany and to realise your high-level, innovative research projects.
- You can get financial support up to 1.65 M € for 60 months (5 years) to cover personnel costs, living costs, travel expenses, equipment, goods & services, 15% overheads.
- The host institution is allowed to use a percentage of the administrative flat-rate to provide opportunities for your partner in dual career relationships.
- Alumni programme: Once a Humboldtian, always a Humboldtian.
When to apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award?
There is no current deadline for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award as the Humboldt Foundation are currently discussing the continuation of the award and are therefore not accepting applications at present.

- Establish or use your Humboldt account.
- Negotiate an outstanding host (supervisor) for your independent research group in Germany, discuss your innovative research project with him/her and ask him/her for institutional support. Academic host is a member of the Humboldt Network Database. The host institution is expected to confirm availability of research facility for your research group by a confirmation and mentoring agreement and by a detailed expert’s statement.
- Contact two referees (your former supervisors) and ask them for references and recommendations.
- Activate the referees and the host institute via the Humboldt account as soon as possible. It is your responsibility to check that the referees and the host institute have received the request and complete the List of questions.
- Complete your online application form in your Humboldt account.
- Write a long-term research outline of your research group (max 25 pages). Figures and schemes are welcome.

Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants in April 2020.
