What are the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

IOCB Prague offers several doctoral fellowships in chemistry and biochemistry per year to initiate or enhance collaboration between IOCB Principal Investigators (PIs) and their counterparts from foreign laboratories through this short-term (2-6 months) Ph.D. students mobility initiative. Who can apply for the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

Applications have to be prepared by foreign PhD students and consulted with IOCB group leaders, who are the only ones eligible to submit the applications. Applicants must be from foreign laboratories.

Why apply for the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

  • It is a good opportunity to attract talented foreign PhD students from collaborating laboratories abroad to IOCB Prague.
  • It is an opportunity to have a foreign PhD student at your research group for 2-6 months research stay.
  • The Fellowship covers a gross salary of 35,000 CZK per month plus compulsory employer-paid contributions to health & social insurance.
  • There is a potential that some of these students will return as postdoctoral fellows.
  • It is an excellent opportunity to reinforcement of international collaboration.
  • This may contribute to promotion of a positive reputation for IOCB globally, attracting future Ph.D. students based on candidates' positive experiences.
  • Preliminary results, serving as proof-of-concepts for future collaborative projects can be generated.

When to apply for the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

There are two regular deadlines every year: 01 Apr and 01 Oct. Only in duly justified cases may the Commission consider approving applications in the interim period.

How to apply for the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Negotiate the terms and conditions of the research stay at the IOCB (scientific content and duration). (PhD student, IOCB mentor/group leader and applicant’s PhD supervisor at the collaborating institution).
  3. Complete and finalise your application into 1 PDF file:
    1. CV with contacts (address, e-mail, phone) (PhD student).
    2. A Cover letter outlining the motivation for the application (PhD student).
    3. Name of the IOCB group leader/mentor and the envisaged starting date of the fellowship (PhD student).
    4. A project proposal: concise introduction, well-defined objectives, a proposed solution, an anticipated timeline, a brief risk analysis, and references to relevant literature. (max. 3 pages) (PhD student & IOCB mentor/group leader).
    5. A Support Letter from the applicant’s PhD supervisor at the collaborating institution (PhD student foreign supervisor).
    6. A Support Letter of the IOCB group leader (IOCB group leader).
  4. Send the final PDF file with your application to the IOCB mentor/group leader before 01 Apr or 01 Oct.
  5. The IOCB group leader submits the application by sending the PDF via e-mail to fellowship@uochb.cas.cz before 01 Apr or 01 Oct.


Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants within one month of the selection meeting.

The fellowship must be started within 12 months of the award committee's decision, except in cases of maternity/parental leave (18 months extension). If a later start is intended, the committee will require a new proposal to be submitted.

When to submit a final report of the IOCB Doctoral Project?

Recipients of an IOCB Doctoral Fellowship must submit the final report before the end of the employment contract at IOCB Prague.

How to submit a final report of the IOCB Doctoral Fellowships?

  1. Complete and finalise your final report into 1 PDF file.
    • A cover letter
    • A summary of the results as well as possible plans for further work to be undertaken (1-2 pages).
  2. Send the final PDF file with your final report to the IOCB supervisor
  3. The IOCB group leader / supervisor submits the application by sending the PDF via e-mail to fellowship@uochb.cas.cz.
