• Applicant needs to register for an EMBO online application account. Once login details for the account have been received it is possible to start an application. Applicant can apply repeatedly for new project in a different laboratory. New application is only possible 12 months after the end of the previous STF or in the case of unsuccessful applicants, the date of application. Applicant may only submit one application, for one project, at one host laboratory at each round of selection. It is recommended that applications be submitted at least 3 months before the proposed start date of the research visit, or at minimum, applications must be submitted before the start date of the research visit.
• All research activities must be in compliance with fundamental ethical and research integrity principles, such as those set out in the Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, and in the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity.
• Applicant should list and activate contacts of two referees and the host institute supervisor. It is responsibility of the applicant to check that the referees and the host supervisor have received the request and complete the form.
• Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.

The Humboldt Research Award can only be granted once to any one academic. Researchers who have already received a research award for their academic achievements from the Humboldt Foundation are not eligible to be nominated.

Furthermore, the nominee should not have recently won any awards or fellowships in Germany for his or her academic accomplishments. At the time of nomination, the nominated candidate must have been predominantly living and working abroad for at least 5 years. Moreover, the nominees must not have held or accepted an offer of permanent employment in Germany prior to the selection date.

Nominating academics must guarantee that they can provide the necessary infrastructure for the award winner’s own research projects or lecture tours (e.g. access to libraries, materials, facilities). German hosts are also expected to be well prepared for the award winner’s research stay and to act as his or her personal mentor (e.g. finding accommodation).

• Applicants need to be members of a FEBS Constituent Society (e.g. the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), to be working in a laboratory in a FEBS country and to be seeking to work in a laboratory in a different FEBS country.
• Applicants must have a PhD or at least one published paper as a main author in an international scientific journal.
• FEBS Fellowships may not be used to complement or to extend another fellowship.
• The FEBS Fellowship should be acknowledged in any work published relating to the project funded and a reprint of each article should be sent electronically to the Chairperson of the Fellowships Committee.

• Podmínkou udělení stipendia je potvrzení o přijetí k magisterskému studiu na některé z vybraných vysokých škol.

• Individual Endeavour Leadership Program Award recipients must be aged 18 years or over at the commencement of their program. There is no maximum age limit.
• Australian recipients must not undertake their Leadership in a country where they hold citizenship/dual citizenship or permanent residency. International recipients must not hold citizenship/dual citizenship or permanent residency of Australia.

• Supervisors are expected to provide:
  1. informative description of internship project with specific tasks & learning outcomes;
  2. mentoring during the whole internship;
  3. hold at least two in-depth conversations about expectations, tasks & learning outcomes;
  4. adequate workspace;
  5. support in finding a suitable place to stay during the internship & in making first appointments with the necessary authorities;
  6. issue a letter of recommendation based on performance during the internship if necessary;
  7. support with leisure activities;
  8. ranking of the received applications.
• Scholars are expected:
  1. to adhere to all rules & regulations agreed upon with the DAAD;
  2. to immediately inform about any problems or changes occur that might affect the internship;
  3. to do the best to successfully complete the internship;
  4. to be open-minded about different living conditions & people;
  5. to network with other DAAD/RISE scholarship holders in the region;
  6. to submit all reports andother requested documents at the end of the internship.
• Every researcher can host only one intern, can upload only one project offer.
• Supervisors have to submit their project offer to DAAD database. The offer is accessible to anyone who is interested in applying and has registered online.
• Students may apply for up to three projects.
• The timeframe of the internship is individually arranged between the student and the foreign supervisor.

• Host researchers must be eligible to apply for a KAKENHI grant–in-aid and his/her affiliated institution must judge them able to implement the project and to provide an appropriate research environment (e.g., laboratory, equipment, personnel) for it.
• Each host researcher may submit up to 3 applications. When multiple applications are submitted, the host researcher should state the order of his/her priority.
• Fellows/candidates are (i) citizens or permanent residents of Canada, EU, Norway, Russia, Switzerland or the US or (ii) persons who have earned a master´s degree and continuously thereafter been engaged in research for a period of at least 3 years at a university or research institution in an eligible country. • Appropriate host institutions in Germany and abroad must have been identified at the time of application.
• The employing host institution in Germany has to be a university. The German host university must confirm in writing that the postdoc will be employed for the whole funding period. The university will appoint a mentor/scientific host, who will inform the PRIME scholar during his/her stay abroad about developments at the institution and answer his/her queries to ensure a successful reintegration at the end of the period abroad. • Fellows pursue a completely new line of inquiry within the same discipline, or it might be a related line of inquiry in an entirely new discipline. The preference is that Fellows select a postdoctoral laboratory located at an institution different from where they have received their Ph.D. or where they have already planned future research activities, in order to promote a diversity of experience.
• Fellows select their postdoctoral research laboratory, with assistance from the Schmidt Science Fellows program, the Rhodes Trust, respected researchers, and a number of leading universities. We help Fellows identify leading laboratories at elite institutions that conduct exciting new research and provide the opportunity to “pivot” from their current area of expertise during the fellowship year. In all cases, Fellows are expected to have a substantial impact on their labs and participate in publishable research during the postdoctoral year.
• The Program also assists Fellows that want to continue work in their postdoctoral area of study following the completion of the fellowship, or in instances where the initial postdoctoral period should extend for longer than the initial 11-month period of time.
• Fellows are expected to participate at global meeting series. Each meeting has a specific theme and focus, designed to expand the scope of experience and skill sets of the Fellows, and augment their postdoctoral research work.

The Sponsor is also expected to assist the Fellow in attaining his/her career goals.
• Applicants must have received their Ph.D. degrees no more than 18 months prior to the application deadline date, degree conferred between 15 Feb 2017–15 Aug 2018 and must not have been in their Sponsors´ labs for more than one year prior to the application deadline date, joined Sponsor´s Lab on or after 15 Aug 2017.
• Applicants are expected to devote 100% of their time and effort to Damon Runyon-supported research activities.
• Candidates who have already accepted a postdoctoral research fellowship award are not eligible.
• Only 1 fellowship will be accepted from a Sponsor, co-Sponsor or Fellow per review session; there is no limit to the number of applications from an institution.
• Second-, third- and fourth-year funding of awards is contingent upon satisfactory review of the annual progress reports.
• Any unexpected expense allowance may be carried over to the next award year, but any unexpected stipend must be returned to the Foundation at the end of each fellowship year.
• Fellows are permitted to obtain additional awards or grants to cover research expenses only. Fellows are not permitted to hold any other award or grant that supplements their stipend. Fellows are required to seek approval from the Foundation before applying for any other award or grant. Budgetary overlap is not allowed. It is critical that all current and pending grant support for your research be reported to the Foundation.
• It is the responsibility of the host institution to make every effort to ensure that awardees comply with federal immigration policy.
• Fellows my not enter into confidentiality agreements that prevent or delay them from publishing and/or presenting their Damon Runyon-supported research.

• Manuscripts have to be publicly available in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after the official date of journal publication.
• The Foundation has established an annual fund of $25,000 for open access fee reimbursement policy that is available on a first-come, first-served basis to current awardees to pay fees incurred by publishing in open access journals.
• The Foundation hosts an annual scientific retreat. First- and third-year fellows are required to attend to present a poster or an oral presentation of their work.

• Applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent at the start of the fellowship, at the latest. The Ph.D. degree must have been obtained during the two years prior to the application deadline (10 Feb 2016 – 30 Jun 2018/31 Dec 2018). Exceptions to this rule are made for applicants with prolonged career breaks due to parental leave, etc.
• Applicant must have at least one first (or joint first) author research paper accepted for publication or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time the application is complete (Fri 09 Feb 2018).
• Application must involve a change of country. Applicant can apply if he/she has already started working in the host laboratory, but only if he/she has been working there for less than six months at the time the application deadline (10 Aug 2017 – 09 Feb 2018).
• Applicant needs to register for an EMBO online application account. Once login details for the account have been received it is possible to start an application. Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.
• Applicant may only submit one application, for one project, at one host laboratory at each round of selection.
• Applicant should list and activate two referees and the receiving institute contact person as soon as possible, preferably 4 weeks prior to the deadline. • Applied research in a clinical or pharmaceutical (translational) context, in engineering, biotechnology, or nanotechnology, that does not address a fundamental biological problem;
• Clinical and pharmaceutical research related to a disease or to alleviate a medical condition, that only aims at developing methods of treatment and diagnosis, searching and testing potential drug candidates or drug targets, advanced trials of drugs under development;
• Environmental research directly concerned with agricultural issues, environmental problems;
• Ecological projects to discover new species or to monitor and survey protected habitats;
• Observational studies unless they address a specific biological question.

Applicants are not eligible when:

• they started to work in the proposed host institution or host country prior to 1 Apr 2018;
• they have already spent more than 12 months (consecutive or not) in the proposed host country or with their proposed host supervisor on 1 Apr 2019;
• they cannot propose to return to an institution where they have worked in the past if they plan to pursue the same or a similar project;
• they cannot propose to work with: former scientific collaborators or supervisors; any other scientist with whom the applicant has worked or published;
• they cannot propose to take up the HFSP fellowship in the country where they obtained their PhD, even if the applicant is not a national of that country;
• they cannot move from one laboratory to another in the same country.

A candidate who is not a national from one of the member states (MS) may apply to work only in a research institution in one of the MS. A candidate who is a national of one of the MS can apply to work in a research institution in any country.

• Postdocs of any nationality with a Ph.D. completed no more than 2 years prior to the application deadline (Mon 02 Jul 2018) and prior to the start date of the Fellowship (Mon 01 Apr 2019 – Sun 01 Sep 2019). Applicants have no more than 1 year of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the deadline.
• US citizens are eligible to work in US, Canada, abroad; non-US citizens must work in a US laboratory. The HHWF expects that most applicants will reside in North America at the time of application.
• Foreign Students will need to obtain appropriate visa documentation, as required by US Immigration. It is sufficient to simply state in your application your intent to obtain the appropriate visa documentation in time for your intended fellowship activation date. Include this statement as a separate letter in your application.
• The aim of the fellowship is to broaden postdoctoral training and experience, and a significant change of venue is advisable.
• The HHWF supports max 2 fellows per 1 laboratory at one time & will review max 1 application per 1 supervisor during each annual cycle.
• It is permissible to have 2 co-supervisors. Put both names down on the application form.
• One and two-year fellowships are not considered.
• The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) selects candidates for personal interviews which will be held in October 2018. Interview travel expenses from points in the US, Canada, and Mexico are paid by the Foundation. US citizens residing abroad who are approved for an interview will be reimbursed for travel to the interview, up to an amount comparable to the transcontinental domestic airfares reimbursed for other candidates.
• No indirect costs, registration fees, or taxes are paid.
• Supplementation of the stipend is permitted. It is not acceptable to hold concurrently a full fellowship from another source.
• Non-research activities, such as teaching, must not occupy more than 10% of the Fellow’s time.
• The HHWF provides funds for travel to the fellowship location at the time of activation of the fellowship for the Fellow and his/her family. No payment is made for the transportation of household goods. The Foundation also covers travel expenses incurred for the two-day Annual Fellows Meetings held in November. Travel expenses will be reimbursed directly to the Fellow, upon submission of expense receipts. These reimbursements are in addition to the annual stipend and research allowance.
• A two-day Annual Meeting of Fellows is held in November of each year, at which each third-year Fellow presents the results of his/her research. This meeting is an important component of the Fellowship Program because of the opportunity it provides the Fellows for scientific interchange and exposure to biomedical fields other than their own.
