What is the CANON Fellowship?

CANON Foundation in Europe grants up to 15 Fellowships to highly qualified European and Japanese researchers annually. European Fellows are expected to pursue a period of research in Japan whereas Japanese Fellows are expected to do their research in Europe (for example at the IOCB Prague). Who can apply for the CANON Fellowships?

Highly qualified European (including Israel, Turkey, Balkan, Baltic) and Japanese researchers from commercial, industrial, governmental or professional organisations who have obtained at least a Master's degree. Ph.D. students, postdocs, junior researchers, senior researchers.

Why to apply for the CANON Fellowship?

  • It is a nice opportunity for IOCB researchers to spend 3–12 months on a research visit at an excellent research institution in Japan.
  • It is a nice opportunity for Japanese researchers to spend 3–12 months on a research visit in Europe at the IOCB Prague.

  • You can get financial support up to 22 500–27 500 € per year.

When to apply for the CANON Fellowship?

As a result of COVID 19 the annual deadline for applications (September 15) has been extended. The nearest CANON Fellowships deadline is on Mon 15 September 2025.

How to apply for the CANON Fellowship?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your account via CANON Register
    1. Find an outstanding supervisor at an excellent Japanese research institution, negotiate your research project and the institutional support with the Japanese host institution and ask them for the Confirmation Letter to confirm that research & work facilities will be available for you during your whole research visit in Japan.
    2. Find an outstanding Japanese researcher, negotiate his/her research project and the institutional support of the IOCB Prague with him/her and provide him/her the Confirmation Letter of the IOCB Prague to confirm that research & work facilities will be available for him/her during the whole research visit at the IOCB Prague.
  3. Contact two referees who are in a position to comment on your academic or professional qualifications and previous work. The referees can be different to the ones in your CV. Ask them for references and recommendation.
  4. Complete and finalise your online application on your CANON account.

    3. Copy of the highest obtained academic degree or professional qualification (applicant)
    4. Passport size photograph (applicant)
    5. List of academic publications & professional achievements in chronological order containing information on all authors, place and year of publication and page references (applicant)
    6. Research plan including an estimate of total costs (max 1 A4) (applicant & host institution)
    7. Confirmation Letter from the host institution to confirm that research & work facilities will be available for the fellow during the whole research visit (host institution & applicant)
    8. Two reference letters from 2 persons who are in a position to comment on applicant´s academic or professional qualifications and previous work. The 2 referees can be different to the ones in applicant´s CV (referees & applicant)
  5. Submit your online application before September 15. The nearest deadline is on Mon 15 Sep 2025.

The earliest possible term to begin the Fellowship is January 2026.
