What is the DAAD Research Grants?

The aim of DAAD Research Grants is to provide an opportunity to carry out research or continue education in Germany and to promote research projects and the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. Who can apply for the DAAD Research Grants?

  • Postdoc (up to 4 years after PhD defence) for 2-6 months research visits.
  • Ph.D. student up to 3 years from beginning of Ph.D. study for 2-12 months research visits.

How to apply for the DAAD Research Grants?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Negotiate your study visit with a colleague from a selected German Institution and ask him/her for a confirming letter. This must refer to your proposal and guarantee that a workplace will be provided.
  3. Establish your DAAD-Portal account (https://www.mydaad.de/en/) and choose the relevant call. Please note that application portal opens about 6 weeks before the deadline. For detailed information about a registration see the DAAD Portal Registration Guidelines  .
  4. Contact referee and ask him/her to provide a letter of recommendation.
    The form has to be generated in the DAAD Portal (“Request reference” section), see DAAD DAAD Submitting an Application Guidelines  . Send a downloaded form to your university teacher by e-mail and ask him/her to send filled form back to you. You must upload it in the portal under 'Letter of Recommendation'.
  5. Download and complete the online application form.
  6. Prepare and upload the application documents: (PDF format only)
    • CV in tabular form (max. 3 pages)
    • List of publications (max. 10 pages)
    • Description of research proposal (max. 10 pages)
    • Time schedule of planned research
    • Motivation Letter (1-2 pages)
    • Letter confirming supervision by an academic adviser in Germany, which refers to the applicant's proposal and confirms that the host institute will provide a workplace
    • Letter of recommendation from a university teacher (DAAD-form)
    • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s)
    • Other support documents (e.g. training and employment certificates)
    • Language certificate in the language in which the doctorate/research is carried out (likely English in the case of natural sciences)
    • German or English translations of documents submitted in national language
    • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade(s)
  7. Submit your online application before Fri 15 Nov 2024 23:59 CET and Wed 30 Apr 2025 23:59.

The project start date is expected to be 01 June – 30 Nov 2025 for November cut-off and 01 Dec 2025 – 31 May 2026 for April cut-off.
