Who can apply for the Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellowship Award?
Postdocs of any nationality with a Ph.D. completed no more than 18 months* prior to the application deadline date who have been in their American Sponsors´ labs for less than one year* prior to the application deadline date.

- You can apply for open access fee reimbursement from an annual fund of $25,000 to pay fees incurred by publishing in open access journals (available on a first-come, first-served basis).
- You can attend the Foundation’s annual scientific retreats for free to present a poster (1st year) or an oral presentation (3rd year) of your work.
- The Foundation will allow you to take up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth/adoptive parents consistent with your institution´s policy.
- Damon Runyon Fellows are eligible to apply for the Dale F. Frey Award for Breakthrough Scientists.

There are two deadline dates every year: mid-March and mid-August. The nearest Damon Runyon deadlines are on Mon 17 March 2025 4:00 pm Eastern Time and Fri 15 Aug 2025 4:00 pm Eastern Time.

How to apply for the Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellowship Award?
- Find and read programme guidelines:

Find an outstanding supervisor (Sponsor) from an excellent host research institution in U.S. who will provide the best research environment,
support & mentorship for your project. Negotiate mentoring of your postdoctoral research project and the institutional support of the host institution.
Ask the Sponsor to fill in:
- Sponsor’s biosketch in NIH format including a list of current funding (use template 1),
- Sponsor’s letter of support evaluating the candidate’s qualifications for the proposed research project and an assessment of the candidate’s potential for successful independent cancer research,
- Sponsor’s comprehensive and detailed training plan for the candidate,
- Sponsor's mentorship track record with names and current positions of graduate & postdoctoral trainees from the past 10 years (use template 2 sponsor trainee list).
- Contact three referees (one has to be your Ph.D. advisor) and ask them for references and fulfilment of reference letters (they must use the prescribed reference letter form).
- Contact collaborators and ask them for Collaboration Letters to indicate their willingness to contribute equipment, materials, or expertise to your research project.
- Complete and finalise your online application in your proposalCENTRAL account.
The complete application should include the following in sequence order:
- Application cover sheet with all required signatures (electronic/scanned). If applying under the mentorship of two Sponsors, your second Sponsor must fill out the co-Sponsor cover sheet (applicant).
- Sponsor’s biosketch in NIH format including a list of current funding, do not include Sponsor’s full bibliography (use template 1 biosketch, Sponsor).
- Sponsor’s letter of support evaluating the candidate’s qualifications for the proposed research project and an assessment of the candidate’s potential for successful independent cancer research. [If applying under the mentorship of two Sponsors the letter should be written jointly by both sponsors] (Sponsor).
- Sponsor’s comprehensive and detailed training plan for the candidate, up to 2 pages. [If applying under the mentorship of two Sponsors, the training plan for the candidate must be written jointly and each co-Sponsor must submit his/her individual track record of mentorship with list of graduate and postdoctoral fellows trained.] (Sponsor)
- Sponsor's mentorship track record with names and current positions of graduate & postdoctoral trainees from the past 10 years (use template 2 sponsor trainee list, Sponsor).
- Applicant’s biosketch in NIH format. Do not complete the "Scholastic Performance" section (use template 1_biosketch, applicant).
- Applicant’s Research Support form (if applicable, use template, applicant)
- Applicant’s bibliography separate list with hyperlinks to each publication, preprints on bioRxiv permissible (applicant).
- Applicant's letter (2 pages):
- previous research and teaching experience;
- statement on the transformative impact he/she had on his/her field of research as a graduate student;
- if applicant is training at the same institution in which he/she received his/her degree, an explanation of the reason(s) for remaining at the same institution (applicant)
- Applicant’s personal statement (1 page):
- what they anticipate gaining from this award with respect to impact and career development;
- (optional) personal background, may choose to indicate if they identify as an individual underrepresented in the life sciences
- Statement of applicant's long-term commitment to a career in cancer research, this statement should be no longer than 1 paragraph and indicate what applicant plans to do after completing his/her postdoc (applicant)
- Research proposal including figures and/or tables incorporated into the text (max 5 pages of single-spaced, 12-point type with at least 0.5 inch margins):
- summary of the research proposed (this is in addition to the required summary form);
- brief background to the proposed research;
- state specific research objectives;
- description of methods;
- significance of the proposed research to the Foundation’s goals: understanding the causes and mechanisms of cancer and developing more effective cancer therapies and prevention;
- relevance of applicant´s background and the background and previous work of the Sponsor and any other investigators to the proposed research;
- list of references including the full title of each work cited, not included in the 5-page limit (applicant & Sponsor)
- Copy of Applicant´s Ph.D. diploma (applicant)
- Summary of Research Form, not to exceed 1 page (applicant & Sponsor)
- Collaboration Letters. If applicable, up to two letters from collaborators indicating their willingness to contribute equipment, materials, or expertise (collaborators)
- The applicant must activate three referees to supply separately three letters of reference from qualified individuals, other than the candidate's Sponsor, who can evaluate the candidate's qualifications for the proposed research project and assess the candidate's potential for successful independent cancer research, one of the reference letters must come from the candidate's thesis advisor (must use the reference letter form, referees)
- Submit your online application with all required attachments through proposalCENTRAL before deadline. The nearest deadline is on Mon 17 March 2025 4:00 pm Eastern Time and Fri 15 Aug 2025 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application in May for the March deadline or November for the August deadline.
