EMBO Core Facility Fellowship
What is the EMBO Core Facility Fellowship?
EMBO Core Facility Fellowships (CFFs) fund research exchanges of up to one month between core research facilities in eligible countries. The aim is to facilitate the training of core facilities staff, including scientists and technicians, in specific techniques used in core research facilities that provide services to research institutions or universities. Who can apply for the EMBO Core Facility Fellowship?
Active research scientist or technician working in a core research facility with at least one year of laboratory experience. There is no age limit.
Why to apply for the EMBO Core Facility Fellowship?
- You can get financial support (travel costs & daily subsistence rates) for your short (1 week to 1 month) training visit of a core research facilitiy in life sciences in eligible countries.
- You can get specific training related to the core research facility that you can bring back and transfer to your home institutiton.

When to apply for the EMBO Core Facility Fellowship?
EMBO CFF call is open throughout the year. Evaluation results are announced within 1-3 months from the submission date.

How to apply for the EMBO Core Facility Fellowship?
- Find and read programme guidelines:
- Establish your EMBO account and register your ORCID ID.
- Negotiate a foreign supervisor for your short training visit in a core research facility. / Negotiate a short research visit of a foreign researcher to your core research group.
- Negotiate the arrangements for your short stay research visit with your IOCB supervisor and request authorisation to submit the proposal via the internal electronic IOCB Project Proposal Approval System (PPAS). You must be either connected to the IOCB network or via the IOCB Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access this system.
- Ask your current supervisor to write you a confidential reference letter, which they will need to submit online. If you are the supervisor of the core research facility, this letter is not required, please contact fellowships@embo.org to have your application form updated.
- Contact the Project Office to request a support letter from the director of the institute to explain the expected benefits of the exchange.
- Contact the receiving institute supervisor and ask him/her to submit an Acceptance Form online.
- Activate the referees and the receiving institute supervisor in the EMBO online system as soon as possible, preferably by 4 weeks prior to the submission. It is your responsibility to check that the referees and the receiving institute supervisor have received the request and have completed the form.
- Complete your online application form at the EMBO online system.
Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.
- Applicant;
- contact details for two referees;
- address of the receiving institute and contact details of the host institute supervisor & institute director;
- proposed work: title, a 1000-word synopsis of the proposed activity (current state of the home facilities in relation to the proposed expertise to be acquired; detailed outline of the work to be performed at the host facility in order to acquire this expertise), references, keywords (20 words), subject area, proposed duration, justification (200 words), career plan; (max. 1000 words excluding references);
- present work: home institute, current position, current work (500 words: applicant’s past experience; its relevance to the proposed work; describe the type of services offered by the home facility; impact of the new techniques or expertise to be implemented after the visit), benefit to home core facility (200 words);
- basic scientific CV: work experience, education, Ph.D. award, publications;
- other funding sources.

- Two Letters of Reference (referees)
- Acceptance Letter from the receiving institute (Host institution / Project Office & IOCB supervisor)
- Submit your application at any point throughout the year, there are no deadlines. It is recommended that applications be submitted at least three months before the proposed start date.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by e-mail within 3 months.
