APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

  • The UK based scientist and/or project leader (the lead applicant) and the overseas based scientist and/or project leader (the co-applicant) must have completed a Ph.D. or have extensive experience at an equivalent level at the time of application.
  • The applicant and co-applicant must hold a permanent or fixed term contract for the duration of the award in an eligible organisation in their respective countries/territories.
  • The applicant and co-applicant must be based in their respective countries/territories and institutions at the time of application.
  • The applicant and co-applicant cannot be former colleagues or Ph.D. student/supervisor. The scheme is intended to stimulate new collaborations between scientists in the UK and overseas.
  • Applications must be started by the applicant on behalf of the co-applicant and the respective teams, i.e. the application must be initiated through the Flexi-Grant® application portal of the applicant, which can be accessed when logged onto the system.
  • Applicants are not permitted to submit more than one application per round (deadline).
  • Holders of a current International Exchanges award with the same overseas country/territory as the (proposed) application cannot apply until the project has ended, the final research report has been submitted to The Royal Society, the final statement of expenditure (financial report) has been submitted to The Royal Society and any unspent amount of money of the current International Exchanges award has been refunded to The Royal Society.
  • Visiting academics who have been invited by an eligible UK institution are ineligible.
  • Honorary academics of an eligible UK institution are ineligible.
  • Retired scientists who are still active in science must submit their application through an eligible UK institution.

HOST ORGANISATION ELIGIBILITY Eligible host organisations are a university or not-for-profit research institution. Ineligible organisations include industrial, private and commercial organisations, university spin-out companies, and governmental bodies.

ELIGIBLE ACTIVITY

  • Applications have to be new collaborations. This scheme is not intended to be used to extend an existing or recent project or collaboration.
  • Collaborations should be based on a single project.
  • Project participants can include the applicant and co-applicant and also members of their teams. Any project participants must be working in a UK/overseas university or research institute. The Royal Society would like to encourage the participation of junior scientists such as Ph.D. students or post-doctoral researchers.
  • Applications can only support travel between the UK and the overseas collaborator’s country/territory for the applicant, co-applicant and members of their respective team; costs for travel between a third country/territory are not eligible.
  • Activities fundable under this scheme are as follows:
    1. One-off visit collaborations
      • One visit to be taken in either direction, i.e. either the applicant undertakes a visit to the overseas institution, or the co-applicant visits the UK institution.
      • Visits to last between 1 week and 3 months.
      • Up to £3,000 available.
    2. Multiple visits collaborations
      • Collaborative visits to be undertaken over a period of either up to: a. 1 year with up to £6,000 available, £1,500 of which can be spent on eligible consumables or b. 2 years with up to £12,000 available, £3,000 of which can be spent on eligible consumables.
      • Visits must be bilateral, meaning that the applicant and co-applicant and/or project participants must undertake at least one visit to the overseas collaborating institution during the award period.
      • Only participants based at the same institution and working within the applicant’s or co-applicant’s research team directly involved in the collaborative project are eligible to claim travel and subsistence against the award should the application be successful.

When developing funding proposals, researchers must ensure generative AI tools are used responsibly and in accordance with relevant legal and ethical standards where these exist or as they develop. Where generative AI tools are used in funding proposals their use should be acknowledged in the application by naming the AI source and specifying how the content was generated (for example by listing the prompt used).

Evaluation Criteria

The primary considerations are listed below. Successful applications should be strong in all respects:

  • the research background of the UK and overseas scientists;
  • the strength of the scientists and institutions in the area of proposed research;
  • the mutual benefit of the collaboration;
  • the strength of the proposal;
  • the potential contribution to the UK science base;
  • the potential for long-term collaboration.

All applications are reviewed and assessed by two members of the selection panel who have the most appropriate scientific expertise using the criteria detailed above.

  • Applicants must obtain a Letter of Invitation from host institutions in Japan.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D.
  • Applicants must be at the age of 49 years old or younger at the time of submission.

Conditions / Restrictions
  • The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent at the start of the fellowship, at the latest. The Ph.D. degree must have been obtained during the two years prior to the application submission. Exceptions to this rule are made for applicants with prolonged career breaks due to parental leave, etc.
  • The applicant must have at least one first (or joint first) author research paper accepted for publication or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time the application is submitted. If the paper is not yet published but currently “accepted”, “accepted in principle”, “accepted for publication” or in a similar status, the applicant must submit a copy of the editorial letter proving the status of the paper to fellowships@embo.org. Do NOT indicate the journal impact factor. EMBO is a signatory of DORA.
  • A first author preprint with public in-depth peer reviews is also sufficient for eligibility, provided that
    1. preprint is posted on a recognized community preprint server (e.g. ArXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, Zenodo),
    2. the peer reviews are publicly available online,
    3. peer reviews were verifiably obtained from an independent preprint peer review community service (e.g. “Peer Community In”, “eLife”, “Review Commons”),
    4. the reviews provide in-depth expert analysis of the rigor and validity of the research and its contribution to the field. Informal comments, highlights and reviews posted by individuals are excluded. Do not list, as publications, papers submitted or in preparation, papers not in English or abstracts of conference presentations.
  • The application must involve a change of country. Applications to move within the same country are eligible if the applicant has been living or working in that country for a maximum of six months during the 18 months prior to the time the application is submitted. The applicant may apply only to labs where they did not work for more than six months, and they cannot apply to the country where their Ph.D. was awarded.
  • The applicant needs to register for an EMBO online application account. Once login details for the account have been received it is possible to start an application. Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.
  • The applicant may only submit one application, for one project, at one host laboratory in each round of selection. Reapplication is permitted only once, only in case of substantial changes to the proposal and/or the CV of the applicant.
  • The applicant should list and activate two referees and the receiving institute contact person as soon as possible, preferably by 4 weeks prior to the deadline. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check that the referees and the receiving institute have received the request and have completed the form. The reference letters and acceptance letter from the receiving institute must use institutional email addresses and not private ones.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange the interview with the interviewer and to make sure they have all the required documents in order before they travel. The applicant may be asked to give a seminar as part of the interview procedure.
  • Applicants who wish to work in a Non-EMBC Member State must move from an EMBC Member State, must be nationals of an EMBC Member State, must have performed their Ph.D. in one of the EMBC Member States.
  • Starting with the Spring 2020 Call, EMBO will offer funds in EMBC member states for host institutions to issue employment contracts to awardees. Fellows outside EMBC member states will receive a stipend as before.

  • Postdoctoral candidates must apply for the fellowship under the guidance of a Sponsor—a scientist (tenured, tenure-track or equivalent position) capable of providing mentorship to the Fellow.
  • Awards are made to institutions for the support of the Fellow under direct super-vision of the Sponsor (a tenure-track scientist) capable of providing mentorship.
  • In addition to aiding in the planning, execution and supervision of the proposed research, the Sponsor’s role is to foster the development of the Fellow’s overall knowledge, technical and analytical skills, and capacity for scientific inquiry. The Sponsor is also expected to assist the Fellow in attaining his/her career goals.
  • Applicants must have received their Ph.D. degrees no more than 18 months prior to the application deadline date, and must not have been in their Sponsors´ labs for more than one year prior to the application deadline date .
  • Applicants are expected to devote 100% of their time and effort to Damon Runyon-supported research activities.
  • Candidates who have already accepted a postdoctoral research fellowship award are not eligible.
  • Only 1 fellowship will be accepted from a Sponsor, co-Sponsor or Fellow per review session; there is no limit to the number of applications from an institution.
  • Second-, third- and fourth-year funding of awards is contingent upon satisfactory review of the annual progress reports.
  • Any unexpected expense allowance may be carried over to the next award year, but any unexpected stipend must be returned to the Foundation at the end of each fellowship year.
  • Fellows are permitted to obtain additional awards or grants to cover research expenses only. Fellows are not permitted to hold any other award or grant that supplements their stipend. Fellows are required to seek approval from the Foundation before applying for any other award or grant. Budgetary overlap is not allowed. It is critical that all current and pending grant support for your research be reported to the Foundation.
  • It is the responsibility of the host institution to make every effort to ensure that awardees comply with federal immigration policy.
  • Fellows my not enter into confidentiality agreements that prevent or delay them from publishing and/or presenting their Damon Runyon-supported research.
  • By accepting of the award, the grantee and the institution(s) agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of the Intellectual Property Policy.
  • Manuscripts have to be publicly available in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after the official date of journal publication.
  • The Foundation has established an annual fund of $25,000 for open access fee reimbursement policy that is available on a first-come, first-served basis to current awardees to pay fees incurred by publishing in open access journals.
  • The Foundation hosts an annual scientific retreat. First- and third-year fellows are required to attend to present a poster or an oral presentation of their work.
  • The Foundation will allow up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth/adoptive parents consistent with their institution´s policy.
  • Damon Runyon Fellows are eligible to apply for the Dale F. Frey Award for Breakthrough Scientists in the fourth year of their funded period.

Conditions / Restrictions

Applicant must:

  • Be of foreign nationality
  • To work in NLAC (National Laboratory Animal Center) be qualified for animal experiment and experienced with medium and large animal surgery
  • To work in TIRI (Taiwan Instrument Research Institute) have experiences related to biomedical optoelectronics, biochemistry or molecular biology

Other conditions:

  • The student will be responsible for his or her travel allowance, including airfare and insurance, and housing arrangement during the entire duration of the internship program.
  • The relevant research unit may request an oral report before the end of the internship.
  • At the end of the internship program, the student must submit a report to the hosting NARLabs’ center.

Workplace policies:

  • Students should report to the assigned center. If students change centers without approval, NARLabs shall withdraw the internship offer.
  • Students should report to work on time and should not be late or leave early. All types of absences require filling out an application and providing supporting documents. Approval must be obtained from the supervisor. If the number of days of absence amounts to more than a third of the internship period, the student will be deemed to have quit the internship.
  • Except in cases of serious illness or accidents, it is strictly prohibited to take time off by telephone. Requests for absences should be handled in person.

Policies for absences:

Absence without approval: if students did not submit leave application or the application was not approved, NARLabs shall withdraw the internship offer if such number of days amount to seven days.

  1. Sick leave: students should ask supervisor for leave on the day of the sickness before going to the doctor and submit the proof as soon as possible thereafter.
  2. Personal leave: personal leave shall be handled in advance. In case of emergencies, students must telephone the supervisor to ask for leave and submit leave application thereafter. If not, then the personal leave will be considered absence without approval.
  3. Bereavement leave: students may submit application when the event occurs and the proof thereafter. Students do not have to make up internship hours due to bereavement leave.
  4. Official leave: students must provide proof to the supervisor in advance from their respective schools if participating in school activities.

  • The research proposal (scientific quality, significance and innovativeness of the project, suitability of proposed procedures, etc.);

  • Proposals involving the same recruiting organisation (and for Global PF also the associated partner hosting the outgoing phase) and individual researcher submitted to the previous call of MSCA PF and having received a score of less than 70% must not be resubmitted the following year (from 2022 call).
  • Each host organisation (beneficiary) has to have a Participant Identification Code (PIC).
  • The beneficiary signs the Grant Agreement, receives funding, claims costs, and takes complete responsibility for the proper implementation of the action.
  • The Partner Organisation contributes to the implementation of the action, but does not sign the Grant Agreement.
  • Secondments of the researcher to partner organisations are encouraged, but they should be relevant, feasible, and beneficial for the researcher and in line with the project objectives.
  • Maximum duration of secondment is up to 1/3 of the standard project duration for European Fellowships and up to 1/3 of the duration of the outgoing phase for Global Fellowships.
  • The secondment can be a single period or can be divided into shorter mobility periods. It can take place at one or more organisations, which can be located in any country worldwide. A secondment is allowed during any phase of the European Fellowship project, but must take place during the outgoing phase of the Global Fellowship project. For Global Fellowships, a secondment of up to 3 months can take place at the Beneficiary at the start of the fellowship. Secondments cannot take place during the mandatory 12 month return phase in a MS/AC*. Secondments can take place within the same sector or can be inter-sectoral.
  • Non-Academic placements can be up to 6 months in length, must take place at the end of the Fellowship (as an additional 6 months at the end of the project duration), must take place in a MS/AC*, in the non-academic sector, and must be confirmed through a letter of commitment at the time of application. Additional budget can be requested for the duration of the non-academic placement.
  • The transfer of a grant agreement to another beneficiary is only possible in very exceptional situations.

  • Excellence (50%): (1) Quality and pertinence of the project’s research/innovation; ambitiousness of project, how much goes beyond state of the art; (2) Soundness of the proposed methodology (including interdisciplinary approaches, consideration of the gender dimension and other diversity aspects if relevant for research project, and the quality of open science practices); (3) Quality of the supervision, training and of the two-way transfer of knowledge between the researcher and the host; (4) Quality and appropriateness of the researcher’s professional experience, competences and skills.
  • Impact (30%): (5) Credibility of the measures to enhance the career perspectives and employability of the fellow and contribution to his/her skills development; (6) Suitability and quality of the measures to maximise expected outcomes and impacts, as set out in the dissemination and exploitation plan, including communication activities (to be submitted towards the end of the project); (7) Magnitude/importance of the project’s contribution to expected scientific/societal/economic impacts.
  • Quality and efficiency of the implementation (20%): (8) Quality and effectiveness of the work plan, assessment of risks, and appropriateness of the effort assigned to work packages; (9) Quality and capacity of the host institutions and participating organisations, including hosting arrangements.

All IF proposals that score 85% or more but cannot be funded from the call budget will be awarded a Seal of Excellence (quality label awarded to Horizon Europe project proposals – to help find alternative funding).

  • Applicants can be from commercial, industrial, governmental or professional organisations.

  • Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada may only hold their BPF at a Canadian institution. Applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who obtained their Ph.D. from a foreign university may only hold their BPF at a Canadian institution, whereas those who obtained their Ph.D. from a Canadian university may hold their BPF at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.
  • Applicants must fulfil or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a Ph.D. between 15 Sep 2022 – 30 Sep 2026, and before the start date of their award.

Conditions / Restrictions
  • The applicant cannot be employed at the IOCB for more than 9 months before the application deadline.
  • IOCB Prague will support only projects of strong candidates, who did their undergraduate and graduate studies at reputable institutions in Czechia and abroad, based on competitive research that is documented in several original publications in respected journals of the fields. For Czech applicants, international experience is of great advantage.
  • The fellowship must be started within 12 months of the award committee's decision, except in cases of maternity/parental leave (18 months extension). If a later start is intended, the committee will require a new proposal to be submitted.
  • Temporary accommodation in the guest houses of the institute or Czech Academy of Sciences’ guest houses may be offered at an affordable rent.

Call info The IOCB Doctoral Fellowship is designed to support 2-6 months research stays of talented Ph.D. students coming to IOCB from laboratories abroad. Conditions / Restrictions
  • Candidate has to be a Ph.D. student on a foreign university/institution. Doctoral fellowship. can only be awarded once to the applicant.
  • Candidate’s supervisor already collaborates or intend to collaborate with a PI from IOCB as indicated in Letter of Support. The research stay must be coordinated with candidate’s supervisor/institution.
  • The foreign PhD student must become an employee of the IOCB Prague for the duration of his/her research stay. The group leader is responsible for providing a workplace for him/her for the duration of the stay.
  • Funding of IOCB Doctoral Fellowship will be started on a rolling basis upon evaluation.
  • The fellowship must be started within 12 months of the award committee's decision, except in cases of maternity/parental leave (18 months extension). If a later start is intended, the committee will require a new proposal to be submitted.
  • Only in duly justified cases may the Commission consider approving applications in the interim period between the regular deadlines.
  • Based on availability, temporary accommodation in one of the guest houses of the institute or the Czech Academy of Sciences may be offered at affordable rent.

Walter Benjamin position: Researchers based abroad can apply for the position irrespective of nationality and whether they have previously worked in Germany. They will need to present an “Employer’s declaration” (DFG form 41.027) from a German research institution and prove that a local researcher is supporting your career development.

For the Walter Benjamin fellowship (or in the case of a combined proposal): Applicants are eligible to submit a proposal only if you completed the majority of your schooling and university education in Germany and if applicant spent no longer than three years abroad for research purposes after your doctorate in Germany or abroad. Funding can also be provided to researchers integrated into Germany’s academic research system. This is the case if, immediately prior to submitting a proposal, they have worked as a researcher in Germany for a continuous period of at least three years during their doctoral and/or postdoctoral phase.

  • Applicants must not have been working for the host institution selected for the W. Benjamin Fellowship for more than 1 year. The date of the proposal shall apply.
  • Applicants may apply for funding once they have submitted their thesis to the examination office (a proposal must than include a copy of a thesis, proof of the thesis submission, and a statement of the thesis supervisor).
  • Renewal proposals for a maximum of one year can be permitted only in very limited exceptional cases.
  • To facilitate the reintegration of the Walter Benjamin Fellowship recipient into the German research system, fellows may submit a supplemental proposal for a return grant. Return grant must be requested from abroad at least 2 months prior to returning to Germany.

  • It is not possible to apply to several fellowship programmes or the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award Programme concurrently.

Conditions / Restrictions
  • The Humboldt Research Award can only be granted once to any one academic. Researchers who have already received a research award for their academic achievements from the Humboldt Foundation are not eligible to be nominated. Furthermore, the nominee should not have recently won any awards or fellowships in Germany for his or her academic accomplishments. At the time of nomination, the nominated candidate must have been predominantly living and working abroad for at least 5 years. Moreover, the nominees must not have held or accepted an offer of permanent employment in Germany prior to the selection date.
  • Nominating academics must guarantee that they can provide the necessary infrastructure for the award winner’s own research projects or lecture tours (e.g. access to libraries, materials, facilities). German hosts are also expected to be well prepared for the award winner’s research stay and to act as his or her personal mentor (e.g. finding accommodation).

Evaluation Criteria

The nominee’s outstanding academic qualification must be internationally recognised and documented by corresponding successes in research, such as positively received academic publications or previous awards. The main selection criteria include:

  1. the nominee’s outstanding international reputation as a researcher
  2. publications with a demonstrable impact that extend beyond the nominee’s immediate field of work
  3. the significance of the awarding of a research prize in relation to the position of the recipient’s field of work in Germany

Call info The EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants fund research exchanges of up to three months between laboratories in eligible countries. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques that are unavailable in the applicant's laboratory. Scientific Exchange Grants are intended for joint research work rather than consultations.

Conditions / Restrictions
  • The applicant needs to register for an EMBO online application account. Once login details for the account have been received it is possible to start an application. Applicants can apply repeatedly, as long as this is for a new project in a different laboratory. Reapplication is only possible 12 months after the end of the previous SEG or in the case of unsuccessful applicants, the date of application. Applicants may only submit one application, for one project, at one host laboratory in each round of selection. It is recommended that applications be submitted at least 3 months before the proposed start date of the research visit, or at minimum, applications must be submitted before the start date of the research visit.
  • Applications to work with former colleagues, PhD or postdoc supervisors or to work in laboratories previously visited will not be considered.
  • Applications to visit laboratories in the context of an already existing long-term collaboration or involving previous exchanges of scientists will not be considered.
  • The proposed project must be directly related to the work being developed in the home laboratory.
  • Applications to work on a project purely applied, intended to develop a product (commercial or not) or a procedure will not be considered. All projects must have a biological significance and should aim to increase our knowledge on a particular biological process. Similarly, applications for the exclusive purpose of training in a technique rather than as a component of a wider research project, will not be considered for funding.
  • All research activities must be in compliance with fundamental ethical and research integrity principles, such as those set out in the Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, and in the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity. EMBO awardees are provided with free access to an online course on research integrity. Completion of the course is strongly encouraged by EMBO.
  • Do NOT indicate the journal impact factor. EMBO is a signatory of DORA.
  • The applicant should list and activate contacts of two referees and the host institute supervisor. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check that the referees and the host supervisor have received the request and have completed the form.
  • Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.


Proposal consists of
Online Application Form via the EMBO online system:
  1. Applicant;
  2. Contact details for two referees;
  3. Contact details for the receiving institute & supervisor;
  4. Proposed work: a 250-word summary, a 1500-word synopsis of the proposed activity, references, keywords, subject area, proposed duration, justification (200 words), career plan;
  5. Present work: home institute, current position, current work (500 words), benefit to home lab (200 words);
  6. Scientific CV: research experience, full CV since PhD research, education, Ph.D. award, publications;
  7. Other funding sources; career breaks.
  • Two reference letters: one must be from the current supervisor, none can come from referees in the host institute. In the case that the applicant is already an independent researcher, only one reference letter from a legal representative of the home institution (Dean, Director etc.) is required.
  • Acceptance letter from the receiving institute submitted by the host supervisor
  • ORCID ID


Evaluation Criteria
  1. Quality of the project to be developed in the host laboratory (novelty, feasibility).
  2. The suitability of the host laboratory for the proposed work and previous interactions with the home laboratory. Is the topic covered in sufficient depth and breadth?
  3. Value of the exchange for the laboratories involved (expertise or technology transfer, collaboration, co-publication).
  4. CV of the candidate, and in particular research experience.

Conditions / Restrictions
  • Applicants need to be members of a FEBS Constituent Society (e.g. the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), to be working in a laboratory in a FEBS country and to be seeking to work in a laboratory in a different FEBS country.
  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or at least one published paper as a main author in an international scientific journal.
  • FEBS STFs may not be used to complement or to extend another fellowship.
  • FEBS STFs are not awarded for attendance at courses, symposia, meetings or congresses.
  • The FEBS Fellowship should be acknowledged in any work published relating to the project funded and a reprint of each article should be sent electronically to the Chairperson of the Fellowships Committee.
  • A period of at least 2 years must elapse before applications for a second award of a FEBS Short-Term Fellowship will be considered.
  • The application process is handled via online application system.

    1. title,
    2. nature of the work & outline of experiments proposed,
    3. justification for travel to the selected laboratory,
    4. description of the selected laboratory with a list of max 5 relevant publications from the host laboratory,
    5. justification for the time period requested (applicant & supervisor)
  2. Short CV with a list of publications in the format required by the FEBS Journal (applicant)
  3. Host acceptance form (use template provided in the application system, must be signed by the head of the host institute/department & head of the research group(s) where the applicant will work)
  4. Letter of support, must be on headed paper, referee must not work at the host institute (referee, to be notified by applicant)
  5. Confirmation letter from the appropriate FEBS Constituent Society that the applicant is a member (applicant & FEBS Constituent Society)
