ERC Synergy Grants
What are the ERC Synergy Grants?
ERC Synergy Grants (SyG) bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address ambitious research problems. The aim is to promote substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge, to cross-fertilize scientific fields, and to encourage new productive lines of enquiry and new methods and techniques, including unconventional approaches and investigations at the interface between established disciplines. Each Synergy proposal must demonstrate that its objectives can only be achieved through the specific combination of knowledge and skills brought together by the participating PIs - truly novel ideas not just continuations of ongoing work or existing collaboration. See more details in ERC Synergy Grants 2025 summary
Who can apply for the ERC Synergy Grant?
A group of 2–4 PIs of any age and career stage from anywhere in the world working together and bringing different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems. Each PI has to present their profile, consisting of a CV and track record that shows an evidence of research excellence apropriate to their career stage. One PI per research grant, except the corresponding PI, can be hosted or engaged by an institution outside of an EU Member State (MS) or Associated Country (AC).
Why apply for the ERC Synergy Grant?
- It is a prestigious opportunity to undertake your large, interdisciplinary, breakthrough, high-risk research project.
- You can get financial support up to 10 M € for 6 years, the grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible costs.
- Additional 4 M € can be requested in the proposal in total to cover (i) eligible 'start-up' costs for PIs moving to the EU or an Associated Country from elsewhere as a consequence of receiving an ERC grant; (ii) the purchase of major equipment; (iii) access to large facilities; (iv) major field work costs, excluding personnel costs.
- You can do your research in any of the EU Member States (MS) or Associated Countries (AC).

- Negotiate other suitable PIs to complement your expertise to best address the complex and ambitious research question. Each PI should identify his/her Host Institution. Identify further team members you would like to work with and justify their presence in the project. Designate one PI as the Corresponding Principal Investigator.
- Contact the host institution and negotiate the institutional support. For IOCB official agreement with grant submission is necessary to complete the form in the Electronic Project Proposal Approval system. Please, contact the Project Office.
- Create or use your account in the EU Funding and Tenders Portal and activate your access to the call.
- Create a draft proposal, fill in pre-registration data for the proposal. These details will be used by the ERCEA in order to plan the evaluation. You will not have access to this page again once it is completed, but certain data can be modified at a later stage. Be careful to choose the correct Participant Identification Code (PIC) number for your corresponding Host Institution.
- Select carefully the type of contact person you are: Corresponding Principal Investigator, Main Administrative Contact person, Principal Investigator or Contact person (e.g. additional contact person or team-member). We advise that either the corresponding PI or the Main Administrative contact person (the administrative person on behalf of the corresponding Host Institution) starts creating the proposal. Only the person starting the proposal will have the right to manage the access rights of other people to the proposal. The person who creates the proposal will have the 'coordinating' role, and alongside other people at the corresponding Host Institution with a designated coordinating role, will be able to modify any parts of the proposal and to submit it. Further contacts or PIs at other Host Institutions will only be able to edit the parts related to their personal data or their Host Institution (HI).
- Edit contact details, add the name and e-mail of the Main administrative contact person or the corresponding PI, further PIs hosted at the corresponding HI, further PIs hosted at other HIs, additional organisations, and give access to one or more contact persons. Be careful to type the correct e-mail addresses of the PIs and all contact persons. Define the role within the project for each contact person (Coordinator contact, Participant contact, Team member). Once you save the changes, an automatic invitation is sent to all contacts´ e-mail addresses. The invited persons can access your proposal after logging in to the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
- Be aware that only one person should work on the forms at any given time. If two persons work on the forms at the same time, in case of a save conflict, the last save wins, which means that you risk overwriting changes made by another contact person if you are working in parallel. We therefore recommend that you give ‘read-only’ access to your partner organisations/additional contact persons (other contacts) unless it is absolutely necessary to grant full access.
- Together with other PIs elaborate the research idea, making sure that besides the research goals the synergic aspects are considered as well. Work closely with the other PIs and allow time for others to review the draft proposal. Discuss your proposal with other scientists, Project Office and the Czech national contact point.
- Fill in your online Administrative form (Part A) at the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
- General information: Abstract, Declarations;
- Administrative data of participating organisations: Departments, Contact Address, Gender equality plan Yes/No tickbox, PIs career stage;
- Budget;
- Ethics and security;
- Call specific questions.
- Complete the ERC SyG offline Research proposal (B1 template
) and make a PDF from the final version. Visual figures, tables and graphs are highly recommended in the proposal. Part B1 will be evaluated in steps 1&2&3. Discuss your proposal with other scientists, Project Office and the Czech national contact point.
- Cover page;
- Extended Synopsis of the scientific proposal (max 5 pages excluding references);
- Curriculum Vitae and Track Record (max 4 pages for each PI).
- Complete the ERC SyG offline Research proposal (B2 template
) and make a PDF from the final version. Visual figures, tables and graphs are highly recommended in the proposal. Part B2 will be evaluated in steps 2&3. Discuss your proposal with other scientists, Project Office and the Czech national contact point.
- State-of-the-art and objectives;
- Methodology;
- Resources & budget;
- Appendix: Funding ID = All ongoing and submitted grants and funding of each of the PIs.
- There are no predefined panels, but you should choose between 4–6 keywords
(see chapter 4 Annexes in ERC-SyG-2025 information for aplicants
) which are the most relevant to the field of your research.
- Finalise your application at the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
- Administrative form Part A (online on Participant Portal) (applicant & Project Office)
- Research proposal Part B1 (uploaded in PDF) (applicant & Project Office)
- Research proposal Part B2 (uploaded in PDF) (applicant & Project Office)
- Commitment of the Corresponding Host Institution (uploaded in PDF) (Project Office & Director)
- Other documentation needed on eligibility and ethics and security issues, i.e. ethical and security self-assessment if relevant (Project Office & applicant)
- Validate your application. Use the 'Validate form' button to check the validity and completeness of your data. Any warning or error will be listed at the end of the validated form. Once there is a consolidated version of the proposal, the “SUBMIT” button must be pressed. The system performs a limited automatic validation of the proposal. Any problems such as missing data, wrong file format or excessive file size will appear as a list of warnings and/or on the screen. You may submit your proposal with warnings (marked in yellow), but it is not possible to submit a proposal until all errors (marked in red) are corrected. Please note that the electronic checks by the submission system do not replace the formal eligibility review and do not confirm that the contents of these files respond to the requirements of the call.
- Submit your application before Wed 6 Nov 2024 17:00 Brussels time (IOCB deadline is on Wed 6 Nov 2024). Within a few minutes of submission your proposal will be available for download with an e-receipt in the system. You will receive a confirmation e-mail with the summary data of the submitted proposal. You may continue to modify the proposal and submit revised versions overwriting the previous one right up until the call deadline.
- Pre-screen (step 1) results will be announced on 14 April 2025, successful step 2 applicants will be informed by 15 August 2025. Be prepared to present your project to the ERC evaluation panel. The interview will be held in Brussels in September 2025. Your travel expenses will be reimbursed by the ERC.
Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants on 27 Oct 2025.
The grant start date is expected to be in April 2026. Successful applicants are able to start their project within 6 months
of receiving an invitation letter from the ERC.
