What is the EMBO YIP?

EMBO Young Investigator Programme identifies and supports some of the best young researchers in life sciences. EMBO Young Investigators (YIs) are group leaders in early stages of setting up an independent laboratory in EMBC Member or Associate Member States. For more details see EMBO YIP 2025 summary  .

Who can apply for the EMBO YIP?

Junior researchers who are independent group leaders (1–4 years) in life sciences at the pre-application deadline (no earlier than 01.04.2021 and no later than 01.04.2024)

When to apply for the EMBO YIP?

The nearest EMBO YIP call deadline is on Tue 01 Apr 2025 12:00 CEST for Pre-applications and on Thu 17 Jul 2025 for Full applications.

How to apply for the EMBO YIP?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Establish your EMBO account and register your ORCID ID.
  3. Contact three referees (preferably former supervisors) and ask them for references and recommendations.
  4. Activate the referees in the EMBO online system (as soon as possible, preferably 4 weeks prior to the deadline. It is your responsibility to check that the referees have received the request and complete the form.
  5. Fill in your online application form at the EMBO online system.
    • basic CV data;
    • ORCID ID;
    • short summary of ongoing research (max 2000 characters including spaces);
    • details of three referees.
  6. Complete the EMBO YIP 2025 pre-application form   and make a PDF from the final pre-application.
    • CV;
    • publications.
  7. Finalise your pre-application.

    • Three Letters of Reference (referees)
  8. Submit your pre-application before Tue 01 Apr 2025 12:00 CEST (IOCB deadline is on Tue 25 Mar 2025). Pre-application results will be announced by Mid-late Jun 2025. Be prepared to complete and submit a full application and attend an interview with the EMBO Young Investigator Committee (approximately 50 applicants will be invited).
  9. Fill in your online application form at the EMBO online system.

    • short description of the institute.
  10. Complete the EMBO YIP 2025 full application form   and make a PDF from the final application. Figures and tables cannot be included in the application.
    • CV;
    • publications;
    • three best publications: summary and reasons for choosing the paper (each max 1000 characters including spaces);
    • research vision & future directions (max 2 pages + references; figures can be added in jpg/png).
  11. Finalise and submit your full application before Thu 17 Jul 2025.

  12. Attend the online interview with the EMBO Young Investigator Committee on 04-05 Nov 2025. Each research talk should be maximum 10 minutes long. General guideline you may want to consider including the following:
    • You are not expected to reiterate all the steps of your career during the presentation. Please only include the steps that are relevant to contextualising your research.
    • Introduction of ongoing project(s) and results. Outlook and future plans.
    • Any grant or publication updates since submission of the full application

Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants within one week after the interviews. The committee will provide feedback following an unsuccessful interview.
