What is the FEBS Excellence Award?
The FEBS Excellence Award supports early career group leaders by providing €100 000 for research project costs (for purchasing equipment and/or consumables) to be spent over 3 years. For more details see FEBS Excellence Award 2024 summary
Who can apply for the FEBS Excellence Award?
Group leaders of any nationality (Ph.D. completed less than 8 years prior to the application deadline, with justified career breaks being possibly taken into account) who are a members of one of the FEBS Constituent Societies (e.g. the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). The applicant must have been employed as a group leader in the Host institution for at least one year prior to the project submission and who have secured further financial support at the Host institution for the 3-year duration of the award.
Why apply for the FEBS Excellence Award?
- You can receive €100 000 towards your research costs (purchase of equipment and/or consumables) over a three year period.
- You will be able to and are expected to attend one FEBS Fellows Meeting preceding the annual FEBS Congress, upon invitation from the FEBS Fellowships Chair.

How to apply for the FEBS Excellence Award?
- Establish or renew your membership in a FEBS Constituent Society; e.g. the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or other.
- Find and read programme guidelines:
- Ask your host institution for confirmation that you are employed in a salaried capacity and the duration of the contract with the Host Institution.
- Contact one referee (does not work at the host institution) and ask him/her for references and recommendations.
- Contact your FEBS Constituent Society and ask them for Confirmation Letter to confirm your active membership (dated, confirming membership and when the applicant joined).
- Establish your FEBS account and activate contact details of the referee in the system.

Complete and finalise your online application form on the FEBS account.
- Online general application details on academic/research activities (applicant)
- Research proposal (max 10 A4-sized pages of single-spaced text, font no smaller than 10pt Times New Roman, minimum top and bottom margins are 2 cm and 2.5 cm,
uploaded in PDF format, maximum file size 1 MB):
- title;
- purpose including long-term aims;
- background relating the proposed research to the present body of knowledge;
- plan including details of the experiments to be carried out;
- motivation for choosing the laboratory and host institute to be visited, including how it fits long-term career goals;
- list of five recent papers of the host laboratory/department/institute from the last five years;
- list of the most significant papers of the applicant;
- detailed description of the planned expenditure;
- timetable (portrait orientation) of the experimental work to be carried out is to be set out on an extra page not included in 10 page limit (applicant & host supervisor)
- Host institution statement establishing that the applicant is employed in a salaried capacity and the duration of the contract with the Host Institution (Project Office)
- Letter of support from the host laboratory/department/institute head confirming current position and facilities applicant has access to, indicating dates the applicant has already spent at the institute (on official template; Project Office)
- Referee’s letter of support (referee has known the applicant for at least two years and does not work at the host institute)
- Letter of agreement to be signed by both the applicant and the appointed head(s) of the institution in which the proposed work will be carried out (applicant & Project Office)
- Confirmation letter from the appropriate FEBS Constituent Society confirming that applicant is a member and the date when they joined (applicant & FEBS Constituent Society)
- Submit your online application before Mon 01 Jul 2024 17:00 CET.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application no later than 1 Dec 2024.
The grant start date is expected to be between 01 Jan – 01 Jun 2025 (within six months of the award date).
