What is the BridgeY Support?

BridgeY is an internal source of funding available at the IOCB. It is targeted at early career researchers, who have submitted a proposal for an independent project to a national or international grant agency (eg. GA ČR, ERC, etc.) and have been unable to obtain the funding as a result of competition against more senior researchers. This support should help them make their next proposal more competitive.

Who can apply for the BridgeY?

Early career researchers, who have submitted a proposal for an independent project to a national or international grant agency (eg. GA ČR, ERC, etc.) and have been unable to obtain the funding. BridgeY can only be awarded once to the applicant, only in very exceptional and justified cases is it possible to submit a second application.

Why apply for the BridgeY?

  • Gain some extra time to work on preliminary results, validating hypotheses and finishing off publications in order to improve the competitiveness of your resubmitted grant.
  • Gain one year of bridging money to cover your salary and research expenses to finish/move forward your BridgeY research.

When to apply for the BridgeY?

The deadline for BridgeY applications based on GACR grants is is 15th December of the year of the particular GACR call. BridgeY applications based on other grant agencies’ calls can be submitted and will be evaluated on a rolling basis.

  • The IOCB BridgeY support is available for a maximum of one year and is not transferable.
  • The IOCB BridgeY support will be terminated early if external funding is granted.
  • BridgeY can only be awarded once to the applicant, only in very exceptional and justified cases is it possible to submit a second application.

How to apply for the BridgeY?

  1. Find and read programme guidelines:
  2. Negotiate the submission of the BridgeY support application with your IOCB supervisor.
  3. Write a justification letter explaining why you are applying for the BridgeY, signed by yourself and your IOCB supervisor.
  4. Collect the following documents for your application:
    1. Justification letter giving the reason for applying.
    2. Copy of the original project proposal for the external agency call.
    3. The evaluation reports of the external funding agency.
    4. Proposed financial budget requested from IOCB BridgeY.
    5. Specifics of further applications submitted to fund the same project through another agency (title of the project, agency, the role of the applicant, duration, budget, expected date result known).

Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality and significance of the project. The final decision to award the BridgeY support lies with the director.

  • Q: What type of travel expenses can I ask for in my budget?
    They must be directly related to the research, e.g. travel to external sites to make measurements.
  • Q: Are overhead costs of original proposal eligible costs for the IOCB BridgeY budget?
    Overhead costs are not eligible costs for the IOCB BridgeY budget.
  • Q: Is obligatory health and social insurance eligible cost for the IOCB BridgeY budget?
    Yes, obligatory health and social insurance is eligible cost for the IOCB BridgeY budget.
  • Q: What type of project is eligible for BridgeY support?
    It must be a complete research project, rejected individual fellowship applications are not eligible for BridgeY support.
  • Q: Who can be a member of the BridgeY team?
    Undergraduate and Ph.D. students. Provide a justification for the involvement of students in the team.
