What is the EMBO Installation Grant?
EMBO Installation Grants (IGs) support early-career scientists in life sciences to establish their independent laboratories in one of five participating EMBC Member States (Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Greece, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal and Turkey). Who can apply for the EMBO Installation Grant?
Junior researchers from anywhere in the world negotiating a full-time position at an institute or university in one of five specific EMBC Member States. Applicant has received his/her Ph.D. less than 9 years prior to application (14 Apr 2016 – 15 Apr 2025).
Why apply for the EMBO Installation Grant?
- It is a prestigious opportunity to establish your own independent research laboratory in life sciences.
- You can get financial support up to 50 000 € per year for 3–5 years (in total 150 000–250 000 €).
- You become eligible for most benefits of the Young Investigator Programme the Young Investigator Programme.
- You can network and cooperate with other EMBO Installation Grantees.

How to apply for the EMBO Installation Grant?
- Find and read programme guidelines:
- Establish your EMBO account and register your ORCID ID.
- Contact the receiving institute and negotiate your further full-time position and institutional support.
- For IOCB approval with project submission, please complete the form in the electronic project proposal approval system. Please, contact the Project Office.
- Contact three referees and ask them for references and recommendations.
- Activate the referees and the receiving institute contact (projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz) in the EMBO online system as soon as possible, preferably 4 weeks prior to the deadline. It is your responsibility to check that the referees and the receiving institute contact person have received the request and complete the form. Once referees are “activated”, the system will automatically contact these scientists, asking them to provide their letter of reference via the online system. Your application form will remain open for editing.
- Fill in your online application form at the EMBO online system.
- basic CV data;
- ORCID ID;
- summary of current research activities;
- description of the institute (available on request);
- details of other funding applied for or already available to the lab;
- contact details for three referees;
- contact details for the receiving institute contact person.
- Complete the Scientist offline Application form
and make a PDF from the final form.

- publication list - see detail instructions in the EMBO IG guidelines;
- two best publications: summary and reasons for choosing the paper (each max 1000 characters including spaces);
- synopsis of recent work (max 1 page);
- research (max 3 pages + bibliography);
- budget outline (for 3-5 years, detail also additional funds from the other sources available).

- Submit your application before Tue 15 Apr 2025 12:00 CEST (IOCB deadline is on 8 Apr 2025). Pre-screen results will be announced by late June 2025.
- Be prepared for a remote interview with an EMBO Member expert in the applicant’s research area (approximately 50% of the applicants are selected). Candidates will be able to exclude EMBO Members with whom there may be a potential conflict of interest from the process. Interviews will be held on 28 or 29 October 2025, the EMBO Installation Grants committee ranks all applicants. Each candidate receives an overall rank and a rank within their country. All rankings are forwarded, together with a summary of the application, to the Strategic Development Installation Grants (SDIG) Board. The final number of available grants per country (if any) are not known by EMBO ahead of the SDIG Board meeting (late October 2025).
Final evaluation results will be announced to applicants by Mid - Dec 2025.
The grant start date is 01 Jan 2026.
