GAČR WEAVE Lead Agency: GAČR lead

What is the GA ČR WEAVE LA (GAČR lead)?

The WEAVE initiative, based on the multilateral agreement of selected funding providers, provide researchers from the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Croatia with the opportunity to request support for joint research projects with foreign partners part the initiative. Project proposals will be evaluated using the Lead agency principle. This principle belongs to the most preferred evaluation systems adopted in international cooperation of grant providers in basic research because of the low administrative burden. Once funding is approved, agencies support the involvement of their respective research teams in joint bilateral and trilateral projects focused on perspective interdisciplinary topics. A joint scientific project proposal is submitted only to one provider (Lead Agency) and evaluated according to their standard process. Applicants are free to choose which Lead Agency they submit the proposal to.


This “How to Apply” guide applies to the situation where the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) is the Lead Agency. The procedure which applies when the Lead Agency is a funding agency in a different country and GAČR acts as the Partner Agency is described in GACR WEAVE-P cookbook

National rules are binding for the implementation of projects. Each provider supports (financially) the national research team only.

  •   Germany – Deutsche Forschungsgemeinshaft (DFG)
  •   Poland – Narodowe Centrum Nauki (NCN)
  •   Slovenia – Slovenian Research Agency (ARIS)
  •   Switzerland – Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
  •   Croatia - Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ)

Who can apply for the GA ČR WEAVE LA (GAČR lead)?

Researchers of any career stage (no age limit) from research organizations: research institutes, universities, higher education institutions, and other legal entities seated in CR focused on R&D in cooperation with applicants from Austria, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland or Luxembourg.
The Czech part of the project proposal has to be submitted by one main proposer/ institution; collaboration of one or more other Czech partner institution(s) is possible.

How to apply for the GA ČR WEAVE LA (GAČR lead)?

  1. Find and read guidelines:
  2. Inform the Project office about your intention to apply (send an email with the type of project and Evaluation Panel choice to projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz) (by Thu 29 Feb 2024)
  3. Prepare off-line parts of your project proposal: :
    • Part C1: justification of project proposal (up to 15 pages; font size 11, single spacing ; 6 MB, in English).
    • Part D1: CV of the applicant and co-applicants; (up to 2 pages/person; font size 11, single spacing, 1 MB, in English); list of activities over the last 5 years. Ask the foreign applicant to send his/her CV (no page limit).
  4. Complete all parts of your project proposal in the GRIS application [for submission of the project proposal to GAČR as the Lead Agency, select the open call Lead Agency (Weave) – 2025:
    • Part A: basic identification data, abstract (1100 characters), aims of the project (300 characters), keywords, field cassification.
    • Part B: total funding, breakdown of financial items, incl. justification, detailed structure of personnel costs (in English).
      Part B Financial Plan: - total costs requested for foreign part of the project in €.
    • Part E: information on other projects of the applicant and co-applicants.
    • Part C2: expected project results (in English).
    • Part C3: international cooperation.
    • Part D2: bibliography of the applicant, other achievements (in English).
    • Part E: information on other projects of the applicant and co-applicants (in English).
  5. Send your budget for checking (projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz). To do this, send your auxiliary calculation spreadsheet (provided by the Project Office upon request) and a draft proposal version (generated by GRIS) already containing the budget justification section (part B) by (Thu 7 Mar 2024).
  6. For IOCB official approval please complete form in the electronic project proposal approval system. Please complete this only after your budget has been approved by the Project Office.
  7. Send a complete draft proposal (PDF generated by GRIS) for a formal check of its content (Part C1 - need not be complete at this stage) by Thu 14 Mar 2024.
  8. Send a Part C1 or complete draft proposal (PDF generated by GRIS) for a formal check of Part C1 content by Mon 25 Mar 2024 8:00 AM.
  9. After approval by the Project office you will be asked to send a final PDF version of project proposal generated in GRIS system.
  10. Finalise your project proposal:
    • Do an error check (top right-hand corner – if error-free, the button “report chyb” [error report] will change to “finalizovat” [finalize]).
    • By clicking “finalizovat”, generate the final project proposal named “_CZ_f.pdf”. Using the icon “Uložit” [save], save the final PDF in GRIS.
    • Send this PDF without any further modification to projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz.
    • After generating the final PDF version, the project proposal MUST NOT be modified or opened in the GRIS application – breach of the electronic seal is a valid reason for excluding the proposal from the tender.
    • The final proposal will be submitted by the Project Office to GA ČR via the data box. Wait for our message confirming submission and for further instructions. We will require your cooperation with a check of the electronic seal.
  11. The project proposal will be submitted to GAČR through the data box systém by the final deadline of Wed 3 Apr 2024 – will be taken care of by the Project Office. The Statutory declaration will be submitted by the Project Office.
  12. Provide the project proposal to your foreign partner applicant, such that he/she can attach it to the complementary budget application to their local funding agency, according to local terms and conditions,

Final results of the evaluation will be announced by 29 Nov 2024.
The project implementation, if GAČR is in the Lead Agency role, is planned on 1 Jan 2025.

If the partner agency is unable to approve the results of the GAČR evaluation process by the end of 2024, the start of the project will be postponed. If your project start date must be shifted, you will receive detailed information from GAČR on how to proceed.

It is therefore possible that the project start dates may differ, according to this timetable:

  • FWF, Austria: expected 1 Jul 2025
  • DFG, Germany: according to delivery of the receipt from DFG, several possible dates expected: 1 Apr 2025 or 1 Jul 2025
  • NCN, Poland: 1 Jan 2025
  • ARIS, Slovenia: expected 1 Apr 2025
  • SNSF, Switzerland: 1 Apr 2025
  • FNR, Luxembourg: 1 Jan 2025
  • HRZZ, Croatia: 1 Mar 2025
