What are the HFSP Research Grants?

HFSP Research Grants support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. Participation of scientists from disciplines outside the traditional life sciences such as biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nanoscience or physics is recommended because such collaborations have opened up new approaches for understanding the complex structures and regulatory networks that characterize living organisms, their evolution and interactions. Who can apply for the HFSP Research Grants?

Research grants are provided for teams of scientists from different countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches to questions that could not be answered by individual laboratories. Preliminary results are not required and applicants are expected to develop new lines of research through the research collaboration.

Two types of Grant are available:

Research Grants - Early Career
All team members are expected to direct a research group (for no longer than 5 years) and must have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent) – up to 10 years before the deadline for submission of the Letter of Intent. They must be in a position to initiate and direct their own independent lines of research. The HFSP award is not intended to create scientific independence, this is a decision of the research institute prior to the application.

Research Grants - Program
Awarded to teams of independent researchers at any stage of their careers. The research team is expected to develop new lines of research through the collaboration. Applications including independent investigators early in their careers are encouraged.

Why apply for the HFSP Research Grants?

  • Building new international and intercontinental research collaborations.
  • To support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems.
  • Take advantage of the opportunity to focus on the elucidation of the sophisticated and complex mechanisms of living organisms through completely novel and interdisciplinary approaches.
  • You can get financial support up to $2.3 M for 5 years (for the entire team dependent upon the number of applicants)

When to apply for the HFSP Research Grants?

The nearest call deadline for 2024 HFSP Research Grants is on Tue 30 Mar 2023 15:00 CET – submission of Letter of Intent (LOI) (IOCB deadline Mon 27 Feb 2023). Compulsory initiation of a LOI by obtaining a LIXXXX/2024 reference number by March 21, 2023.

Please inform the Project Office about your intention to apply.

How to apply for the HFSP Research Grants?

  1. Find and read HFSP RG-2022 guidelines   and the document "Writing a LOI"   carefully to establish whether your project is clearly in tune with the requirements and emphasis of the research grant program.
See also Frequently asked questions for detailed tips.
  2. Identify relevant partners you would like to work with. Negotiate and justify roles, activities and responsibilities of all Applicants in the project. Designate the Principal Applicant (PA) of the consortium, who will be responsible for a final submission of the Letter of Intent (LOI). Teams with two members at the same institution are not eligible.
  3. For IOCB official agreement is necessary to complete the project request form  . Please, contact the Project Office.
  4. Together with other team members (PA and Co-A(s)) elaborate the research idea.

    Role of the Co-Applicant (Co-A):

    • Co-A 1) All team members must be designated as Co-As on the online form and all Co-As must approve their participation via a link generated by the PA before the application can be completed and submitted.
    • Co-A 2) Fill in a personal section:
      • Personal details
      • Education
      • Research experience
      • Publications from the last 5 years
      • The number of co-publications with other team members (if any)
    • Co-A 3) Discuss the LOI with all team members and prepare your parts of the LOI.

Role of the Principal Applicant (PA):

    • PA 1) PA must have her/his primary laboratory in a HFSP member country
    • PA 2) Ensure that no team member is a Principal Applicant or Co-Applicant on another proposal.
    • PA 3) Set up an account to have an access to the online application form.
    • PA 4) PA must obtain a 2024 reference application number on the HFSP Extranet site.
    • PA 5) PA will be responsible for a final submission of the LOI via HFSP Extranet site.

The Letter of Intent must be submitted by March 30th 2023 via HFSP Extranet site.

The PA will be notified at the beginning of July if the team is invited to submit a HFSP RG-2022 Instructions full   for submitting full applications.

The deadline for invited Full applications will be mid-September 2021.

Timetable of the next steps:

  • Results of LOI assessment – early July 2023
  • Results of Full application – end of March 2024
  • The grant start date is expected to be at the latest December 1st 2024
