GAČR - JUNIOR STAR projects

What is the GAČR JUNIOR STAR?

JUNIOR STAR projects are focused on the support of excellent early-career researchers (max. 8 years from Ph.D.) with the aim of supporting excellent basic research while provide an opportunity for the early-career researchers with an original research topic to build an independent group with several co-workers and modern equipment, that will enrich the recent structure of the basic research in CR.
For submission of JUNIOR STAR project proposals IOCB internal rules apply.
Only junior group leaders approved by the International Advisory may submit a JUN STAR project proposal to IOCB Prague as the host institution. Submission of JUNIOR STAR project proposals to other institutions in the Czech Republic outside the IOCB is not limited.

Who can apply for the GAČR JUNIOR STAR?

Early-career researchers working in the field of basic research from research organizations: research institutes, universities, higher education institutions, and other legal entities seated in CR focused on R&D. The project proposal has to be submitted by one main proposer/organization only.
Applicants up to 8 years from Ph.D. defence (30 Sep 2017 – 30 Sep 2025); excluding career breaks (maternity leave and parental leave, long-term sick leave)
Significant international experience – Ph.D. diploma acquired abroad, a long-term research stay or several short-term research stays abroad, cooperation with foreign authors – as evidenced by joint peer-reviewed paper(s).

Why apply for the GAČR JUNIOR STAR?

  • It is a prestigious junior grant, which provides financial support for an independent/original basic research project for 5 years
  • Max. budget is 25 M CZK/project.
  • Funding for personnel, travel, consumables, services and investment costs.

How to apply for the GAČR JUNIOR STAR?

  1. Find and read guidelines::
  2. Inform the Project office about your intention to apply (send an email with the type of project and Evaluation Panel choice to projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz) (by Tue 25 Feb 2025)
  3. Prepare the off-line parts of your project proposal: :
    • Part C1: justification of project proposal (up to 15 pages font size 11, single spacing, 6 MB).
    • Part D1: CV of the applicant (up to 2 pages; font size 11, single spacing, 1 MB).
  4. Complete all parts of your project proposal in the GRIS application:
    • Part A: basic identification data, abstract (1100 characters), aims of the project (300 characters), keywords, field classification.
    • Part B: total funding, breakdown of financial items, incl. justification, detailed structure of personnel costs.
    • Part E: information on other projects of the applicant and co-applicants.
    • Part C2: expected project results.
    • Part D2: bibliography and other achieved results of the applicant.
    • Part E: information on other projects of the applicant.
  5. Send your budget for checking (projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz). To do this, send your auxiliary calculation spreadsheet (provided by the Project Office upon request) and a draft proposal version (generated by GRIS) already containing the budget justification section (part B) (by Tue 4 Mar 2025).
  6. For IOCB official approval please complete form in the electronic project proposal approval system. Please complete this only after your budget has been approved by the Project Office.
  7. Send a complete draft proposal (PDF generated by GRIS) for a formal check of its content (Part C1 - need not be complete at this stage) by Tue 18 Mar 2025.
  8. Send a Part C1 or complete draft proposal (PDF generated by GRIS) for a formal check of Part C1 content by Thu 27 Mar 2025.
  9. After approval by the Project office you will be asked to send a final PDF version of project proposal generated in GRIS system.
  10. Finalise your project proposal:
    • Do an error check (top right-hand corner – if error-free, the button report chyb [error report] will change to finalizovat [finalize]).
    • By clicking finalizovat, generate the final project proposal named _CZ_f.pdf. Using the icon Uložit [save], save the final PDF in GRIS.
    • Send this PDF without any further modification to projectoffice@uochb.cas.cz (by Mon 31 March 2025).
    • After generating the final PDF version, the project proposal MUST NOT be modified or opened in the GRIS application – breach of the electronic seal is a valid reason for excluding the proposal from the tender.
    • The final proposal will be submitted by the Project Office to GA ČR via the data box. Wait for our message confirming submission and for further instructions. We will require your cooperation with a check of the electronic seal.
  11. The project proposal will be submitted to GAČR through the data box system by the final deadline of Thu 3 Apr 2025 – will be taken care of by the Project Office. The Statutory declaration will be submitted by the Project Office.

Final results of the evaluation will be announced by 31 Oct 2025.
The project implementation must start on 1 Jan 2026.
